The Clogau St. David's goldmine in Wales has been associated with the Royal Family for over 150 years. The veins of gold are difficult to find, making the Welsh gold extremely rare.
In 1986, Queen Elizabeth was gifted with a kilo of this gold for her sixtieth birthday, so there should be enough available gold to fashion bands for the Royal couple, but the question remains: will Clogau gold be used? Ben Roberts, the Managing Director of the company says that the still unanswered question "adds to the excitement".
In the last century, this gold was used nearly exclusively for Royal purposes. At the investiture of Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1911, King George V placed the coronet, made entirely of Clogau gold on his son's head.
The Queen Mother founded the wedding ring tradition in 1923 when the then-Lady Elizabeth married the Duke of York, later George VI (and subject of this year's hit movie "The King's Speech") on 26 April.
The same nugget used for her parent's wedding rings was used in 1947 when Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, married his Princess, now Queen Elizabeth II.
Other Royal bands made of that same nugget were given in marriage to Princess Margaret in 1960, Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, in 1973, and Charles, the Prince of Wales to Princess Diana in 1981 and to the Duchess of Cornwall in 2005.
Prince William and Kate Middleton is a modern Royal couple who have broken tradition in many ways. Kate graduated from university and has worked and led her own life, so it is unknown how much Royal tradition means to her, or to her and William as a couple.
She does, however, wear the same engagement ring as William's mother. Princess Diana's ring is an eighteen karat blue sapphire surrounded with diamonds. Many have wondered if Kate wouldn't want her own engagement ring, but apparently she is happy to wear it.
This only adds to the speculation regarding the couple's wedding rings. Will they or won't they wear Welsh gold? Perhaps the rings are meant to be as secret and special as the wedding gown. One thing seems to be certain: we will have to wait until the 29th of April to find out.
