What is the history of this tradition, and do a lot of people still follow it? It is safe to presume, in the twenty first century, that only a small percentage of people, especially within the U. S., think that it is important enough to adhere to it on a strict basis. However, the individuals who choose to honor the tradition, do so with a sense of pride and a tend to receive a feeling of personal satisfaction.
There is no telling, for sure, when this tradition started, but it was between several hundred years ago, and possibly more than a thousand years ago. History is sure of the location; Germany. So now we know who to thank, (or blame.) The wife would be presented with a wreath of silver at a celebration with neighbors and friends, when a German couple made it to 25 years.
It was not that common, since the life expectancy was much shorter in those times, so the celebration was for the marriage, but also for the fact that both the husband and wife were still alive. At fiftieth anniversaries, which did not occur much at all, the wife was given a wreath of gold.
As the years went by, more gifts were associated with various years. There is not agreement between various cultures, therefore the list below is for the United States: Year 1 is for paper and the 2nd anniversary is cotton. Year 3 is the year for leather. The fourth anniversary is fruit and/or flowers.
The next year, number 5 is the year of wood, while the 6th anniversary is all about iron. The 7th year is wool and year 8 is for bronze gifts. Anniversary number 9 is the year for pottery, while ten is easy to remember; tin. Year 11 is the year of steel, and the 12th anniversary is for silk. Lucky 13 is lace, while the 14th year used to be ivory. However killing elephants is evil, so an alternate has taken its place; opal. Year 15 is the Crystal anniversary.
Do not ask why, but we count by 5s the rest of the way. Year 20 is china and year 25 is silver, while the 30th year bring pearls. We have another alternate in the name of caring about life on Earth. Coral has been replaced by jade for the 35th anniversary. Ruby is the 40th and number 45 belongs to the sapphire. We remember 50 as the golden year. 55 is for emeralds and 60 is for diamonds.
