Roller Shades Offer Classic Style With Superb Function
Say "roller shades" as a window covering and most people will think
, "Boring!" Well, this traditional shade may be simple, but it doesn't have to be boring.
For starters, think of the ingenious construction of a roller shade. It's a piece of vinyl or fabric, wrapped around a turning dowel. It can be raised or lowered by hand or by a cord. With the flick of a wrist, the window is completely covered for privacy, or totally opened to let in cheery sunlight. What an invention!
What's more, later generations of inventors have added to the many uses of roller shades, which may be a factor in their comeback today. From the fabric or vinyl shades used by our grandparents, we now have four different versions of window shades made for special uses.
Sheer: Window shades of this type are material from extremely light materials that are practically like having nothing at all on the windows. These keep out very little light, and they provide the barest minimum of privacy.
Second, there are Light Filtering shades. These let in less light than sheer versions and give a bit more privacy, but they are no means opaque. That quality belongs to the next two classes of roller shades.
Third, we have room darkening shades. Talk about your serious light control; these shades are meant specifically for bedrooms. They keep out light so people can sleep.
Blackout: These are the darkest of all window shades, excellent for bedrooms (especially for people who work the graveyard shift) and for media rooms and home theaters. With blackout shades on the windows, it's easy to watch movies in the family room during daylight hours.
Shades are made for the purposes of controlling exterior light, providing privacy and shielding people from denizens of the outside environment such as flies, mosquitoes and other pests.
For controlling exterior light, there are solar shades. This version resembles a blackout screen, but it's manufactured with materials intended to keep out harmful UV rays and excess solar heat. Solar shades are usually made of vinyl that's coated with fiberglass, polyester or a combination of one of these materials with additional aluminum for reflection. Privacy screens also can serve as solar shades, but they're not as durable without a vinyl coating. Privacy shades usually are constructed of fabrics like linen, cotton or polyester.
Insect mesh screens are a type of roller shade that keeps out insects such as flies and mosquitoes. This type of shade often is installed on front porches and covered patios. They offer no privacy and minimal light filtering, but they're good at keeping out pests. Two other versions of roller shades, woven wood and paper, are considered less desirable because of their tricky maintenance. Wood requires special attention to its finish, while paper tears easily.
Finally, humans often desire beauty in the same way they need air and water, and these aesthetic impulse extends even to roller shades. They can be custom-designed in any color or fabric to match any decorating scheme. Do-it-yourselfers often take a plain vinyl or fabric shade and decorate it with craft paint to create a one-of-a-kind artwork, especially for children's rooms.
Old-fashioned though they seem, roller shades maintain their popularity by being versatile in both form and function.
