Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System – Should You Install Them?

Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment System Should You Install Them

?

You have probably heard it a hundred times, either on the television or in the magazines that reverse osmosis water treatment system results in fresh, clean and pure water. However, is it the truth or some promotional tactic? Well, in this article we shall discuss the same.

Functionality of any reverse osmosis water treatment system is based on an old technology called reverse osmosis, which is opposite of osmosis process. Technically, in order to maintain equilibrium when the molecules naturally move from high concentrated area to low concentrated area, it is called osmosis. Conversely, in reverse osmosis equilibrium is not maintained; instead, concentration in high concentrated area increases while concentration in low concentrated area decreases.

Reverse osmosis water treatment systems have a semi-permeable porous membrane through which the water is forced to pass through. The filtered water is collected at the other end of this porous membrane. So, is this water safe for human consumption?

The answer is no, because the water today contains a wide range of contaminants like chorine, THMs, VOCs, lead, mercury, etc. and water is safe only if none of these impurities are present in it.

Nevertheless, the RO based water filters can only remove the impurities whose size is larger than the size of pores in the semi-permeable layer. You will be surprised to know that there are many smaller impurities like chorine, THMs, VOCs, etc. that can easily pass through the semi-permeable layer, and become the part of filtered water.

Agreed, RO based water purifiers can effectively remove some of the impurities. However, the filtered water still contains harmful organic chemicals. This is the reason that experts round the globe do not recommend these purifiers.

In addition, RO based purifiers results in de-mineralization of water i.e. the resultant water does not contain the essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, etc. This is because the size of these minerals is quite large and hence, they cannot pass through the porous layer and are retained in the membrane itself. As a result, you and your family are deprived of nutritional values of water.

Besides, above health issues, the reverse osmosis water treatment system has detrimental environmental effect too. To filter 1 gallon of water, 2-3 gallon of water is wasted. Moreover, it is quite slow too; 1 gallon of water is filtered in approx an hour. This means you will have high electricity as well as water bill every month. In the end, not to forget their basic one time installation cost too; typically it is $300.

In conclusion, the reverse osmosis water treatment system is not the way to go. There are many innovative technology based water purifiers available that results in real clean, fresh and pure water. If you wish to learn about them, visit my website mentioned below.
