Realistic Weight Loss

When most people decide that they want to change their life and lose weight the initial thinking is to do it as soon as possible

. There is usually something that has occurred in their life that motivates them to take action. It could be newly discovered medical issues or simply an event where they want to look their best. The problem with this approach is that it may push you to set unrealistic goals for yourself.

A realistic weight loss approach is incredibly important because it will help you to achieve your goals. If you set your goals too high you may become frustrated and give up before you lose the weight that you plan on.

So what's a realistic approach to weight loss?

Set the goal and make certain is measurable in as many ways as possible. Decide how much you want to weigh. Aim for a certain body fat percentage (in some cases this is better to aim for than weight). Pull some old clothing that you use to fit in and use that as a measuring tool (aim to fit in it again...but be realistic).

You should not plan on losing more than one pound per week. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to lose more, but one pound per week is a realistic weight loss goal and it is achievable. You may lose more and that's great but shoot for one pound per week. If you're trying to lose one pound in seven days it will allow you to be more balanced in your approach to weight loss. It will minimize the need for you to take drastic measures to achieve your goal. You will not find the need to starve yourself or over exert yourself exercising.

A key factor in realistic weight loss is to give yourself time. The body needs time to adapt so a crash diet where you lose ten pounds in a week is not good. However, if you weigh three hundred pounds and you don't exercise or eat healthy, the drastic change in eating and exercising may cause a significant drop in weight in the beginning. Your goal should still be one pound per week.

Don't be discouraged or think that one pound per week is not enough because in 3 months you would lose 12 pounds. But it's 12 pounds that you're more likely to keep off than if you lost it in 2 weeks. Moreover fast weight loss may not be healthy for the body in the same way that fast weight gain is also not healthy for the body. Putting your body through drastic changes is never a good thing.

Changing your body through weight loss is a challenge and in most cases it is much easier said that done. What makes weight loss easy is how we view ourselves mentally and the status of our self image. Our subconscious mind helps to determine the type of person we will be in every way, including the physically. If we "see" ourselves as healthy, fit and trim then we will eventually become that way without effort. It is hard to work against the mind. It is not possible to think one way and be another.

There is a method of losing weight that does not require much 'effort' or 'stress'. I am not suggesting that you will not need to take action or that it will not sometimes be difficult. As a personal trainer I know this is not the case. I do know that there are things that you can do that will make the process easier. You need to know certain foods to never eat and certain foods to include in your diet. You would be amazed how much easier losing weight becomes if you knew these simple tips and strategies.
