Pros and Cons of an Online MBA

More and more universities around the country are offering online MBA's. Getting a masters in business administration provides many benefits and with the increase in technology, more and more institutions are able to provide the course material necessary for these degrees over the internet. These MBA courses are designed for easy access to anyone interested in enrolling. If you have a day job but are interested in getting an MBA, it is easier than ever to accomplish this on your own time, at your own place.

There are programs available that are completely taught over the internet with no in classroom time needed, while other programs, commonly called distance learning MBA programs, do require a small amount of time in the classroom for campus based lectures taught over a long weekend. This is something important to keep in mind when deciding on a specific program. Many people like the idea of spending some of the time actually in a classroom, able to ask questions directly to the professor in person. Others don't see much value in this and prefer just to do everything online.

One option is to enroll with a traditional university that has been offering MBA courses on campus for years. These schools claim that the MBA programs they offer are nearly identical to those taught purely in the classroom. It comes down to the content, and as long as all the same content is covered, you should be able to learn just as much from an online or distance learning program as you would from an on campus program. However, a drawback to only learning online is that you never have much interaction with the other students in the program. This can end up being a large part of the value you get from an MBA program by all of the networking opportunities you would have with fellow MBA program students.

A great benefit to online learning is the complete availability. You can access the content whenever you have the time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is a big advantage to people who already have very busy lives. Either way, you want to make sure you enroll with an accredited university, with a good reputation. Most recruiters will look at an online MBA and an in class MBA as basically the same thing, but they won't compare schools as being the same.
