Personal Responsibility: Make Your Own Job

Internet Entrepreneurs Are Lay-Off Proof Patriots

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that unemployment compensation was a great form of economic and job stimulus. Her assertion was, essentially, that unemployment checks not only help the unemployed but, because of the spending they stimulate on the market, those checks create jobs. In fact, the speaker said, the government unemployment check is "better at creating jobs than any initiative you can name."Personal Responsibility: Make Your Own Job

Whatever your politics are, you'd have to say that statement is an indication of a fundamental transformation in the basic governing philosophy of the speaker's political party. The general theme is one of being taken care of. I tend to hold more with this thought put forward by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his first inaugural speech: "These dark days will be worth all they cost us if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered unto, but to minister to ourselves, and to our fellow man." John F. Kennedy's inaugural address echoed a similar sentiment with the famous exhortation to ask not what our country can do for us, but what we can do for our country.

Our nation is locked in one of the greatest ideological battles in its history. Some want the government to do more for people, and spend more on social programs such as unemployment. Others see a terrific threat in tax-and-spend tactics that leave us with an unbelievable national debt. Even if we could handle the debt in future generations, will our government's current "stimulus" (bail-out) strategy really accomplish anything positive? Will people have the motivation and inspiration to create and achieve things when the burden of taxes is higher than any of us has heretofore seen? Will we become so dependent on government programs (like unemployment) that we lose both the will and the ability to earn our own livings? Over time, these are clearly dangers.

I wonder what Ronald Reagan, if he were a working man today, would do if he were laid off. As president, a couple of his famous quotes are revealing: "Government isn't the solution to the problem; government is the problem" and "Government does not solve problems - it subsidizes them."

It's not hard to see unemployment compensation as a government subsidy of the problem of unemployment... and it's just as easy to see what a fundamental difference there is between the two philosophies of government intervention and personal responsibility.

Suppose you lose your job, through no fault of your own. What can you do? What would Ronnie Reagan have done?Personal Responsibility: Make Your Own Job

Here's an idea, and you might think it's a radical one: don't take the check. Refuse unemployment, and until/unless you find a new job, make one at home. We live in an age in which a person with a computer and some ingenuity can literally create a job for themselves with an unprecedented low level of financial investment.

If you were able to establish your own home internet business, you'd take at least one person out of the unemployment line, all by youself, and without the government's help. Instead of losing your skills, you'd have to use them - and grow them - to be successful in your business. You'd be able to minister unto yourself and to your fellow man, without asking what your country can do for you.

Think about it. If you decide to investigate it further, I can recommend a wonderful way to get into business, get smart about it, and get serious about being a successful entrepreneur. After it's all said and done, you could be in possession of a business you own, rather than feeling "owned" by an employer (or, worse, the government). And you'd be completely safe from being laid off.

After all, and with a nod to this week's holiday, it's as Reagan said: "We don't celebrate 'dependence day' on the Fourth of July - we celebrate Independence Day!"
