Pediatric Dentist Or Family Dentistry?

Pediatric Dentist Or Family Dentistry?

Considering family dentistry for your little one

? Once those first teeth start coming in moms start thinking about going to the dentist. Some dentists recommend waiting until your child is three; others want to see your child as soon as they have teeth. There are some advantages to both scenarios. Of course a three -year old can be talked to. Well, sometimes. If you start your baby out getting exams with their first few teeth they will come to think the visits are normal and may not develop a fear. In the meantime they may bite the hygienist, and for some parents the appointments only add to the pile of used sick time they will have to use.

Perhaps most important is gaging your child's personality, your limitations, and your families dental history. For instance, if you and your husband have a hard time with cavities or fear of these visits it may be best to foster a healthy relationship. If you are working a new job and baby just sprouted two new teeth it would be okay to wait. If you choose to wait on that first appointment be sure to get baby a tooth brush and begin a good oral hygiene routine early. Brushing at least twice a day is recommended.

Your hygienist will play an important role in identifying problems. They will find cavities that need to be addressed, remove excess plaque and help foster an oral hygiene routine that will protect your child's future oral health. There are pediatric offices and family dentistry practices to choose from. Perhaps the main difference is that pediatric offices don't see adults. They can offer your child that special toy at the end of the visit and they may be able to sedate a nervous child for fillings. The advantage to a family -oriented practice is making appointments on the same day as yours, and being familiar with the practice yourself.

At early appointments either practice will know that your child may need a gentle approach. It may be easier if you go into the room with your child. If you find that the first appointment doesn't go well it may be helpful to have your child go in with the hygienist while you wait in the waiting area. Of course we all know you will want to peek in. If your child has older siblings take advantage of that. Let your younger child observe your older child. Remember to let your hygienist build a relationship with your child. If one visit is unsuccessful don't give up. Each time your child gets older. A family dentistry practice can be nice because each time you go your child can watch others before they try. Remember to talk positively about the practice and perhaps even read books prior to the visit with your child. Soon enough your child will cooperate.
