Ouch, Dentist! My Teeth Hurt So Much!

Have you ever had the experience of enjoying a cold drink only to have a painful

sensation when the cold hits your tooth? A dentist will explain to you that you have sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth can cause pain when drinking hot drinks, sweets or even moving air, hot or cold.

Sensitive teeth causing pain is accepted by many people as a condition that they must endure. Understanding the causes can help to alleviate some of the pain but will not replace the need to visit the dentist for a full examination. They will determine the cause of your pain and work to eliminate it for you.

Causes of Teeth Sensitivity

Some common causes are physical in nature and some are environmental and can be easily controlled. Some adjustments in your diet and habits can relieve the pain from teeth sensitivity. There are many causes for sensitive teeth but here are the most common:

Poorly Aligned teeth cause your teeth to rub on each other causing the enamel to break down. With some misaligned teeth, an overbite occurs and the effected teeth become very sensitive. Grinding of teeth is similar to an overbite, sometimes the grinding breaks down the enamel and causes the nerve ending to be exposed, causing a teeth sensitivity.

Overuse of mouthwash is an environmental cause that can be easily controlled. The overuse of the same strong mouthwash through many years will cause the breakdown of enamel and therefore the teeth become sensitive. In addition, teeth with large, deep cavities will be sensitive. The dentist must fill the cavity or remove the tooth for the sensitivity to be controlled.

Treatments for Teeth Sensitivity

Consult with your dentist immediately when you first begin to feel sensitivity as they will examine you and find the cause of this. But you can also examine your oral care routine and try to assess the procedures that you are currently using. First change your toothbrush each month. Using a soft bristle brush with a sensitive brand of toothpaste will help to prevent any enamel from wearing down. It is important to remember that what you eat affects your oral health. If you eat a lot of highly acidic foods then the enamel on your tooth will react to the acid and begin to break down. These are environmental habits that can help prevent a tooth from being sensitive.

Once you have seen the dentist the treatment will begin by filling all cavities and removing any tooth that is decayed beyond repair. Crowns and bridges will be inserted to replace any tooth that is surgically removed. These artificial insertions are a cause for the tooth next to the one inserted to be sensitive for a short amount of time. There are cases in which the crowns or bridgework have to be adjusted in order for the bordering tooth to be in alignment.

Practice Prevention!

Sensitivity is usually a symptom of a larger problem. Teeth that are beginning to decay will be sensitive if it is not properly taken care of. Regular visits to the dentist are the best way to prevent a tooth from becoming a major problem and causing the pain that is suffered from teeth sensitivity. Regular and effective oral care will help to keep the dental checkups to be positive and supportive of good dental health.
