The recent adverse weather cause many immediate upsets to the day to day lives of many Britons, especially in Scotland and North-East England. From burst pipes to trapped cars on motorways, the past two weeks have witnessed the worst winter conditions in decades for many parts. However, as we experience something of a respite from the record breaking conditions, the more long term effects are beginning to be felt.
It took a few days for roads to recover from the punishing weather, with a backlog of traffic coupled with icy conditions amounting to gridlock on many major routes. Businesses have suffered greatly as an effect of the inability of many employees and customers to make it out of their streets. As such, many trips to the high street or shopping centres have been ditched in favour of online shopping from the warmth of your own home, where snow fuelled road rage and freezing toes have no place.
The result is the overload of many online companies at their busiest time of the year. The persistence of ice and snow in some parts has compounded already strained operations in the parcel delivery industry.
Many retailers such as M&S, Boots, Tesco, and Parcelforce have suspended deliveries to Scotland due to the continued disruption of the recent cold snap and heavy snowfall. As many struggle to overcome an increasing backlog of orders, the situation is becoming increasingly bleak for many customers, whose Christmas gifts are stuck somewhere between the retailer, the parcel depot and a delivery van on the M8.
However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. With the window of opportunity presenting itself as we experience a relative heatwave, many have returned to the shops and will continue to do so over the next week and a half until Christmas. In Scotland, the weekend witnessed some of the busiest shopping days on record, with Glasgow and Edinburgh bearing the brunt of the dash for Christmas gifts.
Such respite will provide some leeway for online deliveries to make it through their backlogged orders, and, perhaps with the help of a Christmas miracle, will manage to get their deliveries out to all before the big day.
Not all online retailers are experiencing such a meltdown however, with many continuing to provide a good level of service during this festive frenzy. If you plan on ordering gifts online at this stage, just make sure to check with the retailer regarding delivery issues.
Another option to save some time on online orders is to send the package directly to the recipient. For many purchases this may not be the best option (the package may be unwrapped and with the price tag still attached), but for items such as Christmas hampers, food and drinks, flowers, or other personalised gifts available online this could be a real time-saving idea.
