NFL AFC East Division review

About to reach midseason, lets take a look at how the AFC North is coming through in comparison to last season, to have a clearer picture of what can be expected from them.

The Bills finished the 2009 season with a 6-10 record, suffering 3 of those defeats in the last five games of the year. Positive aspects that are worthy of being recognized are Jairus Byrd's nine interceptions, setting a record in the franchise for a rookie; Terrell Owens' 1,006 career receptions that position him as the sixth player in NFL history in that category; Lee Evans' career 5,356 receiving yards and 39 touchdowns that put him third in the Bills' history. And last but not least, running back Fred Jackson's 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 kick return yards that make him the only player in NFL history to do so in the same season.

This season has been a disaster for the winless Bills that seem irremovable from the last place of the AFC standings. With a 7 lost strike they have dug their grave, and only a miracle could change their early virtual elimination. They where very close to end this negative strike during the past two games that were forced to over time, but the story had the same ending: 37-34 at Baltimore and 13-10 at Kansas.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is one of the high points of the team, but there is not much that he can do by himself. He has done a great job replacing Trent Edwards as the starting quarterback, and has 12 touchdowns in the 5 games he has played this season. Wide receiver Steve Johnson has also been doing a prominent job, with 409 yards for six touchdowns, the highest numbers since his arrival in 2008.

Their next game is at home on Sunday against the Chicago Bears, where they will try to break the spell that has kept them away from winning this season.

The Dolphins lost 3 of their last 5 to finish 7-9 in the season, and no really memorable moments to highlight. No group or individual NFL records where achieved, but in franchise history there where good results individually from cornerbacks Sean Smith, who became the first rookie to see action in all 16 games of the season, and another rookie, Vontae Davis, tied the 1989 four reception record from Louis Oliver. Wide receiver Davone Bees was the fifth player with 75+ interceptions (76) in one season, and Jason Taylor the fourth player to play three decades in Miami.

This season the Miami Dolphins have shown us their two faces: a disappointing one at home, where they have lost 3 out of 3, and a pretty impressive one on the road, with 4 out of 4 won. With 9 games to go, they are just 3 wins away from last season's record, and if they get to perform at home like they do on the road, they could be a serious contender for the New England Patriots and the NY Jets.

In 2009 the Jets clinched a wild card and began their race to the Super Bowl after finishing the season 9-7, making the best of it in the last games, where they won 4 out of 5. For the AFC Wild Card Round they defeated Cincinnati 24-14, did the same to San Diego in the Divisional Round, but with a tighter score: 17-14, found the end of their season against Indianapolis, losing the Championship round 17-30.

If there is one thing in particular that will always be remembered about this season, that is rushing yards: matched Buffalo's 1975 two game strike of 300+ rushing yards in Weeks 6 and 7, and with 2,765 rushing yards set a new franchise record, that was previously achieved in 1979 with 2,646. Running back Thomas Jones was one of the highest points of the team with 14 rushing touchdowns, the highest in the Jets' history. Jones also recorded 1,402 yards that year, and joins Curtis martin as the only two players in the franchise to rush for 1,400+ yards.

The only way to improve last season's performance is by reaching the Super Bowl, and the Jets have been seriously working on it, with 5 wins and two loses. Those victories were product of a 5 win strike that began in Week 2 and came to an end on Week 8, when the Green Bay Packers took advantage of the poor offensive performance from Mark Sanchez and company after Bye Week. Their next game is at Detroit (2-5), a good chance to get back to the winning strike.

The Patriots clinched their division thanks to their 10-6 record, and had another good season in the AFC East, where they have won the division title in seven of the past nine attempts. This was also the ninth season that has ended with 9 or more wins. Baltimore put an end to their season with a 33-14 defeat in the Wild Card Round. In week 12 the New Orleans Saints stopped a 17 win strike in regular-season games against NFC, the highest since 1970. Quarter back Tom Brady surpassed Drew Bledsoe 26 300-yard games franchise record, setting it at 30. With an 8.8 receptions per game average, wide receiver Wes Walker recorded 1,348 receiving yards thought the season, and is second in team history. And Randy Moss can't be left behind, as he reached his 14,000 milestone for yards receiving, and is now sixth in NFL history with 14,465.

The New England Patriots are the only team with six victories so far in the season, and have lost only to the Jets in Week 2. From then on they got a 5 win strike. Tom Brady is having another great season guiding the Patriots, throwing 147 of 225 for 1602 yards and 12 touchdowns. Their next game is against the Browns (2-5) at Cleveland, and they shouldn't be a menace to extend their winning strike to 6.
