Mobile phone coverage is actually very impressive these days
, with networks managing to cover about 99 per cent of the UK, with only the most remote or rural areas having any sort of problem. But not every network is created equally and before choosing a network or contract which can last 24 moths, you certainly want to make sure you're going to have a phone that gives you a strong signal where you are likely to be. There's nothing worse than buying a brand new phone only to find out you can't find signal in your own home!Networks and coverage
The network you are on will determine the coverage you get, and not every network has equal coverage. That means that somewhere where your Orange phone might get full signal, an O2 phone might have no signal at all. Such a large difference is quite rare, but usually you will find that every different network will report different signal strength be aware though that some phones have different ways of support signal strength than others!
There are two main types of mobile phone coverage in the UK that your phone will likely connect to. The first is 2G, which is generally what we are referring too when we speak about signal. It controls our ability to do simple' tasks like using your phone for voice calls and texting. The other type of signal is 3G, which is used for more elaborate tasks, like browsing the internet, using location based services and reading and replying to emails.
Only 3G phones can use 3G though! Most phones these days have 3G enabled, but a few older ones do not. What most people don't realise however is that masts are the same not all of them are actually enabled with a 3G signal, so even if you do have a 3G phone and a very strong 2G signal, there may be some areas where you simply can't compete.
The quality of coverage
A study from 2009 showed that consumers believe that having a good signal is more important than any other part of owning a mobile phone, and that includes the cost or the phone, the quality of customer service and the headset make or manufacture. We've all seen what happens when users run into signal problems you only need to look how much trouble Apple got in earlier this year!
The study showed that the most important reception issue for consumers was the reception in their own homes, and that 36% of those studied have came across areas outside where they've had no phone signal at all.
What to do about poor coverage
Before taking out a contact, it's vital you run that providers signal checking program to make sure signal is good in your area. It won't guarantee good signal, but throwing in your postcode means you'll have evidence that you check out the strength of the signal before you get a new phone, which will help you if you want to try and get a refund at a later date.
There are not many tips and tricks when it comes to reception. Your phone either works or it doesn't. When you begin a contract however, it's likely certain problems with reception can be resolved if you're persistent enough. Within the first two weeks, in most cases, you should be able to return the phone or make a compromise with the company. This will only work if you've performed a check on the area, though!
