Thousands and thousands of people dream of having their own business but are put off with the start up costs, accommodation, staffing etc
. so consequently resign themselves to the fact that it will never happen. However by starting their own MLM home based business it can be possible to make their dream come true.An MLM, or network marketing, home based business does not require a lot of start up money, accommodation could be your spare room or dining room table, you dont need staff, the business model works for literally millions of people and the financial risk is low. There are, however, a few things to consider before taking the plunge and hopefully this article should help to guide you in the right direction.
THE HARD FACTS
This is probably the bit you dont want to know but, trust me on this, it is very important so read on.
Firstly if someone approaches you or phones you up and tells you they have a simple, easy and guaranteed way to make money with little or no work they are blatently lying to you and you should tell them that to their face. Out of the many thousands of MLM or network marketing lead companies out there there is only a small percentage which have survived more than 15 years. The business model works, that is a proven fact, but the companies that failed were never set up correctly to start with and failed for two main reasons, the main one being the products quality, desirability or longevity and the other one being that the compensation plan didnt work for the distributors.
Hopefully what I say below will give you some helpful pointers to make a more informed and rational decision on something which could potentially change your life for the better.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
In my opinion the first thing to be considered is the product. I know many people will tell you that the most important thing is the compensation plan, but no matter how good the plan is you wont make any money if the product is rubbish!! When you look at the product ask yourself the following questions is it well sold and advertised by the company?, is it top of the pile in quality?, can it be bought in a store?, does it have staying power? The answers to these questions should be yes, yes, no, yes. Obviously it has to be well advertised and be top quality but if it can be bought in a store it loses exclusivity and stores have a really nasty habit of heavy discounting!! If the product doesnt have staying power, ie people wont want it after say 5 years, your business will have the same shelf life and that is not what you want.
There are many forums and blog sites dedicated to MLM and Network Marketing and you should spend time browsing through some of these to find comments and articles on the company that you are interested in. However, when doing this bit of homework you should always be aware that more people register their dissatisfaction with things than do their satisfaction. In other words take some of the comments with a pinch of salt. Most of the people who complain and bitch are probably distributors who have failed simply because they spend more time complaining and bitching than they do working to make their MLM business a success.
If you are satisfied with the results of your first bits of homework then you can move onto examining the compensation plan very carefully. Compensation plans will have many different names and systems and you must understand fully the system that you are going to be paid through. If you dont understand what something means ask you proposed sponsor or google it. To be honest google is probably the best option because if your sponsor is not too sure how it works he may well tell you a load of nonsense. It may sound good but it will still be nonsense!
WHAT IS REQUIRED?
An MLM home based business is just like any other business. If you want it to be successful you will have to work hard at it, find out as much as you can about the company and product and commit lots of time to it.
It is also essential that you have a business plan and ideally you should have thought about that even before joining the company. Your business plan should include two marketing plans, one for marketing the product itself and another for marketing your opportunity to others, because getting others to sign up to the product will generate you more money and give you a residual income.
YOUR MLM BUSINESS PLAN
As I said before you should have thought about your business plan before joining your company and indeed if, having done all the homework and thought about a business plan, you decide not to go ahead with signing for the company all of that work will not go to waste as you will be able to use or adapt your business plan for the next company.
As far as your business plan is concerned the most important parts of it are going to be lead generation and then advertising. Do you understand how to market on the internet? Are you able to build your own website? Do you know how to drive traffic to your website? Will you do your own advertising? Will you take part in company or team funded advertising events? How much are you prepared to invest? How much training are you prepared to give to your downline team?
All of these questions need to be addressed, ideally before signing on the dotted line, as the answers will be the difference between owning a successful MLM home based business or being on of those that fail within a few months.
