Meeting With Multiple Mastectomy Doctors

Meeting With Multiple Mastectomy Doctors

It is possible to find several mastectomy doctors in your local area but choosing the right one is not always easy

. If you are wondering what your next step should be, consider setting up at least two initial consultations with surgeons in your area. You can find out what options are available to you and which would be best for your current condition. This can be difficult and you want to be sure that you have all of the information first.

The Options to Consider

Many women have the option to remove the entire breast or they can go through a lumpectomy to just remove a portion of the tissue. To make sure that you are making the right decision and removing the right amount of tissue, it makes sense to see more than one surgeon. If different mastectomy doctors have different ideas about what should be done, it is up to a woman to look at all of the information that she has and then figure out which procedure makes more sense and which surgeon should take care of it.

The First Appointment

Most patients start out seeing one of the mastectomy doctors recommended by their current physician or their oncologist. Make the first appointment and consider waiting until this meeting is complete before you move on to the next practitioner. Get as much information as possible from this first surgeon. Ask all of the questions that you have and try to get an overall feel for both the office and the individuals that you will be working with. At the very least, you want something to compare your next experience to.

A Second Opinion

Even if things go well at the first appointment, it can't hurt to get a second opinion. If you have time, go through the same process with a second surgeon. Ask the same questions and see if the responses are any different. Look to see if there are other alternatives that you can and should consider. While you may not want to see a ton of mastectomy doctors, at the very least, you want to see more than one to get a clear picture of your situation.

Once you have met with two or more mastectomy doctors, take some time to think over everything. Weigh out the benefits of having complete removal versus just a portion of the tissue being taken out. Aside from the medical aspects that need to be considered, most women also want to think about how they are going to feel about their bodies an themselves once the operation is complete.
