Mediterranean diet and Twinkie diet, which is better for weight loss?
It does not matter what you eat as long as you eat reduced amounts of calories, you will lose weight. For instance, eating Twinkie diet or junk food diet results in weight loss, a new smallest trial in the world has just found.
The trial involving only one man - Dr. Mark Haub, nutrition professor at Kansas State University showed the subject ate mostly snack foods and sweets and lost 27 pounds in 2 months.
There is a catch, Dr. Haub ate only 1,800 calories each day and took vitamin supplements just in case he develops certain nutrient deficiencies. Twinkies, snacks and cookies were not the only things he ate.
Note that the U.S. government does not recommend you eat 1,800 calories a day for a man like Dr. Haub. If everyone in the country used only 1,800 calories a day, the food industry would suffer a great loss in sales.
Anyway, Dr. Haub usually ate 2600 calories a day, and he had about 200 pounds of body weight prior to engaging in his own weight loss program. In addition to the weight loss, Haub had his "bad" cholesterol lowered by 20 percent, and good cholesterol increased 20 percent, and cut triglycerides - the scary blood fat by 39 percent. These are all good signs.
The trial suggests that as long as you control caloric intake, what you eat may not matter much when it comes to weight loss. You don't have to follow Aktins' diet, South Beach or whatever diet.
However, experts are concerned about this diet saying this junk food diet is non-sustainable and people can't eat this diet for long as they can't continue eating this same old Twinkie diet. Once they return to their old good day dietary habit, lost weight will come back.
Dr. Colin T Campbell, nutrition professor of Cornell University said in his book China Study that the best diet for long-term sustainable weight loss or maintenance of a healthy body weight is a plant-based diet, which is not energy dense, but provides foods that satisfy the appetite of a person so he won't overeat and won't become obese.
Dr. Campbell himself lost lots of weight after following a vegetarian diet. He has not only changed his body weight status, he also had gained a better health status.
Another good diet may be Mediterranean diet.
One study published in the Oct 25, 2010 issue of Metabolism Syndrome and Related Disorders suggests that Mediterranean diet is a useful tool to lose weight.
The study led by Esposito K and colleagues from Second University of Naples in Naples, Italy found subjects eating Mediterranean diet reduced their body mass index by 0.57 kg/m2, and lost 1.75 kilograms of body weight during a 6-month follow-up, compared with those eating a control diet.
The authors said epidemiological evidence has already supported a causal link between Mediterranean diet and weight loss.
They found the associations after meta-analyzing data from sixteen randomized controlled trials with 19 arms and 3,436 participants, 1,848 eating Mediterranean diet and 1,588 eating a control diet for a period of six months.
The researchers also found the impact of Mediterranean diet was greater when subjects used other weight loss strategies like caloric restriction and physical activity in addition to Mediterranean diet.
Together with Mediterranean diet, caloric restriction helped reduce 3.88 kilograms of body weight and physical activity helped reduce 4.01 kilograms.
The researchers concluded "Mediterranean diet may be a useful tool to reduce body weight, especially when the Mediterranean diet is energy-restricted, associated with physical activity, and more than 6 months in length."
