Lice Suck: Removing Them Can Be A Tricky, But Necessary Part Of Childhood

Lice is a common problem among children who attend school

. It is very common for one child to contract lice from a sleepover at a friend's home or by sharing a hairbrush. Once lice has been detected at a school, there are often lice checks on the head of every single child that attends school. Children who have lice detected on their heads are sent home for the parents to fix the problem, normally by using very toxic shampoo on their beloved child's head.

The poisonous shampoo can be toxic to children just as much as it is to lice and if not used properly, can actually become ineffective for the lice it was meant to target. The most popular brands of lice treatment shampoo are becoming less effective for lice as they develop a resistance to the poisons in the shampoo. Alternative shampoos and treatments exist for lice but are not widely known.

In some unfortunate cases, uninformed parents use products that are highly toxic, flammable, and untested for safety or known to be unsafe for the treatment of lice on their children. Substances that are never recommended for lice removal include gasoline, kerosine, petroleum jelly and vodka or mineral oil. These can all be very damaging to the child especially if they have the unfortunate experience of catching fire to their hair. These substances can create burns that can scar or even kill a child and should never be used for lice removal.

The best option for lice removal treatments include treating the child with a non-toxic, proven substance. Natural products exist that do not contain pesticides or toxic substances. One of these products might include paw-paw, an all-natural natural pesticide that is safe for use in lice treatments for children. Another product that works well in conjunction with other treatments includes a peppermint extract and other natural products lice find repellant. Using a quality comb to remove lice eggs from hair can help break the life cycle as well as provide a visual confirmation that the lice have died. Specialized lice combs have fine teeth and are normally made from metal, making them easier to sanitize and clean before using on another head.

This is important in families that might have multiple members with a lice infestation. If lice spend more than forty-eight hours away from human blood, they will die of starvation. Objects like sheets, pillows and other bedding need to be washed and then run through a dryer for at least twenty minutes at a high temperature to kill any lice or eggs.
