All of us have, at one point in time or another

, walked along and been surprised by a sudden pain in our knees. The knees are a joint in the body, which means that, just like every other joint in the body, they're a weak point. Long, straight bones, like your leg bones or your arm bones, tend to be very difficult to break because of how solid they tend to be. Joints like the knee bone, however, are fairly easy to damage because they are a weak spot in the body. While absolutely necessary, they are also very difficult to keep healthy, especially if you're someone who does a great deal of physical activity on a regular basis. So how do you go about avoiding getting knee injuries?

Strengthening the Knees

One of the first things that you should do if you're an athlete, or prone to knee injuries, is to strengthen your knees. A physician or physical therapist can examine your knees in order to check and see if there is any muscular weakness or imbalance. If there is an imbalance or weakness, a workout routine can be created for you that can help you to increase the stability of your knee while, at the same time, decreasing the chance of knee injury. This may include conditioning and strength training.

Conditioning the knee means doing exercises that improve flexibility. If you improve flexibility in the hamstring, you then improve flexibility in the knee, and lessen the chance of a serious knee injury occurring. Most serious athletes use these types of flexibility exercises to keep their knees healthy, so as to avoid serious injury. Learning How To Avoid Knee Injuries


Training

You will also find that athletes slowly increase their training so as to avoid getting knee injuries. Athletes who ramp up their training too quickly often find that they are more prone to getting injuries. This is because the body has not had the chance to fully get used to the training that has been occurring. When in training, an athlete should slowly speed up their training schedule to allow the body to fully appreciate that work that is being done for it. In most cases, this means increasing the training only 10% each week, so that the muscles, tendons, and ligaments have time to become adjusted. Doing this can seriously lessen the possibility of knee injuries.

Children

Parents who have children who play sports often worry about their children getting injuries that last a lifetime. Children have naturally flexible bodies and so they don't often have to worry about getting seriously injured, but as children become teenagers, injury is more possible, so make sure that your child is following along with their coaches recommendation if they are going to be playing serious sports, and that, if required, they take time to let their body, and knees, heal.

Following along with a coach or physical therapist when it comes to your body can help you to avoid getting serious injuries, including knee injuries, allowing you to stay in the game as long as possible.
