Learn Ninjutsu - Increase The Speed Of Your Punches And Kicks Like A Real Ninja!

One of the most common questions that I get from students

, both online and in "live" classes and seminars is about "how to increase the speed of your punches and kicks. This is a great question. But, most often, the words that form the question are not really the question at all.

Confused?

Don't be.

What I mean is that there is a deeper level, strategic question behind the words, "How do you increase the speed of your punches and kicks." And, that question is...Learn Ninjutsu - Increase The Speed Of Your Punches And Kicks Like A Real Ninja!

"How do I get my weapon to the target faster, so that my opponent can't block, parry, or evade it." How do you create a situation so that your assailant can't "beat" your punches and kicks?

Those are the questions.

However, in the Ninja's personal protection system of Ninpo-Taijutsu (aka "Budo Taijutsu"), speed is not seen from the perspective of "fast." We do not think of "speed" in the same way that most people do.

What I mean by that is this:

Most people think of speed from the viewpoint of how quickly you can move a limb - how fast you can move the arm or leg to punch, grab, or kick. The average martial artist thinks about the arm or leg doing the moving as a whole.

The Ninja, however, thinks about this very differently.

Instead of seeing an "arm" or a "leg," the Ninja recognizes the different parts of the limb. And, instead of seeing the fist or the foot, and the target to be struck...

...the Ninja sees the space between the 2 that must be crossed for the strike to happen!

Do you understand?

Do you see the difference?

It's not always easy to understand this, especially since most of us have been taught to look at speed (or strength, power, etc.) only one way, and have thought about it "that" way all of our lives. But, when you understand this, then everything will be very different for you. And others will have a very difficult time beating you, because they won't understand how you are creating the, so-called, "speed" in your punches and kicks - how you're getting to the target so quickly.

Here are two methods that the Ninja uses to increase the speed of his or her strikes and kicks. There are others, like "muscle-relaxation and tension," etc., but for the purposes of this article, we will focus our attention on these two base-level ideas. Alone, each will significantly increase the overall speed of your attacks. But, when done together... look out!

1) Look at the different parts of, in this case, the arm (shoulder, upper arm, forearm, fist, etc.) like gears in a machine. Each "gear" has a certain length, and therefore has a certain "timing" in the overall movement of the arm when moving from point-to-point. Long parts will naturally take more time to get into position than shorter ones.

The lesson is to figure out the best timing that will get the arm (or leg) to move at it's maximum speed and go from fully flexed to fully-extended in the shortest amount of time.

2) Focus on the space between the weapon and the target. This is something that very few people see, or take into account - regardless of whether we are talking about punching and kicking, or any other aspect of the self-defense paradigm.

In the Ninja's perspective, which is very scientific, the idea is to remember that distance equals time. What that means is that:

A greater distance requires more time to cross. And...

A shorter distance requires less time to cross.

So, instead of trying to make his arm or leg move faster to get to the target, the Ninja uses his body movement and maneuvering to...

Position his weapon CLOSER to the target BEFORE the punch or kick begins.

Doing this, creates the perception of greater speed, without the Ninja needing to use more energy or expose himself during the punch, grab or kick.

As you can see, the Ninja's approach to combat is not the same as that used by the majority of other conventional fighters, martial artists, and self-defense practitioners. The question is, do you want to learn techniques that everyone else knows - and knows how to beat. Or, do you want to have the advantage regardless of how big, fast, or strong your opponent is?
