It's Time To Overcome Your Fear Of The Dentist!

High-powered drills, razor-sharp knives, picks-when exposed to these words you might think of Tool Time with Tim Taylor

. But all of these instruments are common in a place you're all too familiar with-the dentist's office.

For some of you, the dentist's office might be the place that you can sit in a cushy chair and relax as a trained professional makes your smile beautiful so you can feel more confident. But for most, the feeling is rather different; most people would rather sit at the DMV for hours on end instead of getting their teeth cleaned!

It is very common for people to have a fear of the dentist. For most, it's the fear of having sharp things jabbed into your mouth and having severe pain inflicted on you in the name of dental progress. For some, it might be the comfort of personal space you have give up in order for the doctor to get right up into your mouth.

Because of these and many other fears, many people just don't even bother going to the dentist. We all know people that haven't been to the dental office in 4 or 5 years (maybe even longer); and maybe that person is you.

Having a lack of dental care for that long can yield a lot of damage to your precious teeth. Most oral problems can be easily prevented with regular check-ups at the dentist's office.

Let's look at some ways that you can curb the dental fears that you've had ever since you were a kid. By overcoming your reservations, you will thank yourself later when you look in the mirror and have a beautiful, healthy smile.

One of the most important things to realize is that the field of dentistry is rapidly changing and growing; and because of that, dental technology is changing too. I don't think the masterminds of dentistry would continually come up with more dangerous and abrasive equipment.

Rather, dentistry technology is becoming more friendly and comfortable. Breakthroughs like computer-controlled anesthetics can make a patient breathe easier.

Instead of having a humongous anesthetic needle stick into your gums and inflict pain, anesthetics can now be controlled by computers, which monitor the amount of pressure and pain a patient feels.

Another great piece of equipment is the electrical drill. They are much quieter than mechanical drills, which have a high-pitched squeal that put customers on edge.

In addition to these great technologies, there are even more being developed as we speak. The new "laser drill" is making its way into institutions around the country and is much gentler on teeth than traditional drills.

Some dentists are trying more "grassroots" efforts in addition to having more friendly technology. This means that they are changing the office atmosphere increase the comfort level of the patient.

Do you hate the medical smell of the office? Many offices use aromatherapy to cancel that smell out and to put more soothing smells in to relax your mind.

Do you hate the abrasive clash and grind of drills and other dental equipment? An increasing number of professionals give patients the option of having headphones with which they can listen to soothing music or watch TV.

Your eyes don't have to panic either. In the past, offices were filled with pictures of patients with gum disease, oral cancer, or other horrifying pictures. Do you think that makes anybody feel more comfortable?

Luckily, many are changing their decorating styles. They have more visually stimulating pictures and decorations that will relax the customer and assure them that they are in a safe place.

Finally, if you go the right dentist, you can gain their trust and they don't have to be someone that is foreign to you. Right off the bat, tell them of your specific fears so that they can have an understanding of your specific personality.

I am sure that they will do everything in their power to make you feel comfortable so that having regular check-ups won't be anything close to a death sentence. Talk to your dentist as soon as possible to have them help, and if you don't like your current professional, find a new one that will help you overcome this terrible fear!
