It's A Good Idea Not To Ditch The Dentist

It is odd to think that dentists share any kind of common demographic with public speaking and spiders

. For many skittish people, however, the three form a triumvirate of terror, invoking the most instinctive, base kind of fear. But why? Just as public speaking has enriched the business world, our eight-legged comrades have done the same for pest and insect control.

Similarly, dentistry has made significant improvements in hygiene, health, and overall quality of life. Still, many people refuse to go for regular dental checkups out of frugality, laziness, or fear. As hilarious as a poorly maintained layer of machismo can be, the ramifications of skipping the dentist aren't so sidesplitting.

The concept of the holistic scope of medicine is often lost on dental checkup critics. Now, with the advanced panoramic x-rays and related examinations that dentists use, there is much more being examined prior to procedures than just teeth. The most dangerous form of checkup avoidance, then, is dodging the doctor and the dentist, as both professionals can effectively diagnose troublesome developments. Panoramic x-rays, for example, can spot many health problems in their analysis of the veins of the upper neck. Any blockage in the carotid artery that would cause a devastating stroke can be detected and prevented by this examination.

Aside from the prospects of tangential health-related findings, avoiding the dentist can have detrimental effects on a person's main hardware itself. Oral cancer, for example, infects 480,000 people a year. When unchecked, it kills over a quarter of those people. Bad breath, painful toothaches, actual tooth erosion, and gingivitis are conditions that all have the ability to work behind the scenes and then manifest themselves when it is already too late.

Although the search for major cures in medicine is a valiant undertaking by any stretch, cures are the last resort. Prevention is certainly much cheaper, safer, and less traumatizing. What about excuses? These are the implements of convenience. One living in a remote area, for example, might journey many miles to see a favorite musician perform. But when prompted as to why they haven't had their teeth checked out, they might complain about the distance.

Visiting the dentist does not need to be a daily, weekly, or even monthly venture. One or two trips a year is all it takes. Excuses can dull the importance of obligations, which is much more terrifying than a routine cleaning and inspection. Just like effort, money seems to be directly correlated with willpower as well.

The only excuse in avoiding the dentist, provided there is some source of income, because one is not able to afford a biannual checkup, is poor planning or skewed priorities. After all, the dentist is not an eight-legged creeper or a crowd full of blank faces on speech day. Aside from having far fewer appendages than both of the former parties, the dentist stands out in his or her ability to improve and save lives.
