Is Home Insurance Calculated by Gender?

Is Home Insurance Calculated by Gender?

Is Home Insurance Calculated by Gender?

Insurance is a complicated business. It is designed to cover a multitude of possibilities and employs a similarly wide-ranging number of elements and risk factors within calculations. This spread of factors isn't just important, it is in fact essential, particularly in providing a fair and even pricing on all policies.

Home insurance offers a fantastic example of just how varied the elements are that go into these calculations. However, one factor that isn't used (at least not to any significant effect) is gender. Unlike car or life insurance, there isn't a clear enough differentiation between male and female customers for insurers to accurately apply them.

Let's take car insurance as a good example. When you're buying cover for your vehicle, the insurer will look at your driving history to derive as much information as possible. They will then apply more general statistics relating to the demographic that you sit in. This includes your job, where you live and your age. Up until recently, it would also include gender. Is Home Insurance Calculated by Gender?

Early in 2011, European Courts ruled that calculating insurance on the basis of somebody's gender was tantamount to sexual discrimination. The largest impact of which was felt in car and life insurance, primarily because they were so reliant on these statistics in their calculation process. However, home cover has remained largely untouched.

The reason for this is that home insurance policies are calculated using different factors that are far more targeted for this type of cover. So for instance the location, size and value of your home will play a major part in how your policy is going to be calculated. Gender is a far more peripheral risk, particularly as many homes have more than one person inhabiting them, often with a mix of sexes.

It is ultimately a calculation of risk that the insurance companies must weigh up. Therefore, if your house is located in an area of high crime and you're looking to get contents cover, with little or no additional security on your property, premiums will be higher. Equally, if you're residing right in the middle of a floodplain, then you would have to expect to pay more than a household located in a safer, risk-free environment.

As with any insurance, you will be rewarded for not making claims. A no claims bonus can build up and provide significant discounts on your premiums. However, it is important to remember that insurance prices and risk factors aren't set in stone. A natural disaster, change in the crime figures in a particular area or downgrading of security features can all see your policy price fluctuate.

You may even make alterations to your home or want to increase contents cover as you purchase more goods or simply have more money available to afford this added level. This all adds up to change in pricing and can often see you paying more, despite having not made a claim or seemingly changing very little about your policy. Unfortunately it is these external issues and the statistics that the insurers collect that will hold a strong determining factor in what you pay.

So the simplest answer to the question posed is that no, gender doesn't have an impact on how home insurance is calculated. Where claimants can be categorised as individuals, such as car, van or life insurance, this is far easier to achieve as distinct difference between males and females can often be found. Instead, home cover relies on a far broader range of factors that relate both to your individual circumstances as well as the wider data relating to your home's locality.
