We have all heard the importance of online safety for kids; that children should
not ever share their passwords with anyone or talk to strangers online, but lets face it- this is easier said than done, especially for your kids. However, there is so much more to all of that. Children have been beaten, hospitalized, permanently wounded and also killed because of something that happened via a social networking website. Unfortunate happenings could also take place in other types of arenas other than these social websites though, including on gaming websites, chat rooms, forums and other areas in which people are able to virtually interact with others.Online safety for kids is something that has become very important in recent years, and with more children starting to use the Web every day, the need for good security and good common sense becomes even more apparent and critical, to say the least.
Probably the very best thing that your children can do is to never talk to strangers. Unfortunately, since people have been saying that very thing for years, kids tend to not listen to it and it falls on deaf ears. However, our children need to understand that people are not always who they say they are, and although we as adults know and understand this, children may not fully comprehend what exactly is so bad about that. You have to explain to them how predators work, and that they will take weeks or months becoming your childs friend, pretending to be someone at school or someone else their age. Then one day they are going to meet somewhere, and the person who confronts your child is certainly not going to be the person they thought they were. Scary, isnt it?
Online safety for kids is also a learning process. Your children have to know to report anything they find suspicious, scary or threatening. Facebook has links all over the place for people to do this, appearing on just about every page. The reports that people make are anonymous, so make sure your children know that no one is going to know who did the reporting. This is important for children because they are often concerned about someone finding out who the tattler was. The success of social networks like this rely on their users to serve as an extra set of eyes and ears and to report content that should not be on there.
Finally, encourage your children to keep you informed and in the loop. Find out who they are talking to, what websites they are visiting, and what they are doing online. This is the only way that you can find out who is on their friends list. Make sure that your child is not posting anything online that could be embarrassing or harmful to themselves or to someone else. Online safety for kids is only as successful as the parents are who are bound and determined to keep their children out of harms way on the Internet.
