I used to LOVE tomato and BBQ sauce. When I was growing up I put them on any snack, meal or treat that I could. I thought it was the best thing in the world and not a day would go by where I would not drizzle these delicious flavourings onto my lunch or dinner. Fast forward to today and I can now tell you that I have not had either of these in over 8 months. Why is this so? Well there are two main reasons:
Most sauces are higher in sugar than you can imagine
We use them to cover foods that don't taste that good anyway!
All of this started when I heard that there was an author called David Gillespie was coming to my college to do a presentation. There was a lot of buzz around the campus about this guy and people were telling me that I just had to come along to see him. I was so glad that I did. He gave me a point of view about sugar that changed the way I looked at food. He shows how sugar, NOT FAT, is the culprit behind us putting on weight and not being able to lose it.
His book "Sweet Poison" (Which I highly recommend) illustrates how sugar is something that is not needed in the body and also how it can be linked numerous medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. He also enlightens us to the fact that we are all, to some extent, sugar addicts. We will go into more detail about sugar and artificial sweeteners in later Steps.
The most important lesson that I learnt was thisalways check product labelling to see the percentage of sugar in it. This is how I work it out:
A product always has the amount of an itemper 100grams
Scroll down to where it says sugar and see how many grams there are per 100grams
If there is 15grams per 100grams then it is 15% sugar! Easy hey?
Well this is where we come back to Tomato and BBQ sauce. Go to your cupboard and have a look at the label on the backyou will notice that the percentage on these are anywhere between 25% and 48%. That's almost half sugar! That is more than most Chocolate sauces! This shocked me so much that I started decreasing my sauce intake straight away. I also got rid of some sweet spreads which I could do without like jams, cranberry sauce etc.
But what about meat pies, sausage rolls and hot chips!? Well I never had consumed any of these unless they were drenched in some kind of sauce.so I continued to eat them and I started to realise that I was not enjoying the food as much. It was the sauces that were keeping me addicted. Even hot chips did not have as much as an appeal if I could not cover them in something the equivalent of hot fudge!
So next time you go to put one of these sauces on your food, take time to think if you can put half the amount or even none at all. Because really all you are doing is feeding your sugar addiction? And is the food you are consuming what you really want to eat? Or is it just a flavourless cheap option that you need to cover with sugar to even get down your throat?
So if I can do this then anyone can because I used to worship Tomato sauce more than anyone I know. Just keep thinking about getting that sugar out of your system and you will be feeling better in no time!
