Motivation To Lose Weight

Motivation is more often than not what separates people who succeed at their goals from those who

, even with the best of plans and intentions, fail. Motivation helps people push on through the difficult parts of achieving their goals and dreams. Losing weight may be one of the hardest things you accomplish in your life. Weight loss takes time and a lot of effort, (unless you go in for extremely expensive and potentially dangerous surgeries. But rest assured, weight loss IS possible, and with the proper motivation to lose weight, you CAN succeed.

Making the decision to lose weight is the first part in determining your motivation. But unfortunately, just deciding to lose weight is seldom enough motivation to succeed in that goal. The following are suggestions to help you increase your motivation to lose weight so that you can succeed.

Accepting Yourself

Figuring out how to accept yourself is the first step in solidifying your motivation to lose weight. With the media bombarding us with images of supermodels and perfect people everywhere we go, its getting harder and harder to gain perspective. Even with proper diet and exercise, you will probably never look like the models and actors in Hollywood. Its better to come to terms with that and genuinely accept it before you start your weight loss. Unrealistic expectations will only set you up for failure. But thats OK, you can still lose weight and drastically improve your health and reduce your risk for many serious diseases and illnesses. And you will likely look better and generally feel better as well. Once you have accepted what you realistically can accomplish, your motivation will likely last through your journey.

Focus on the Positives, not the Negatives

Many people are conditioned to focus on the negative or bad things about themselves and their appearance. This is not only detrimental to your emotional wellbeing, but to your motivation to lose weight as well. Focusing on the positive helps you to realize that things really arent that bad. Try making a list of all of the good things you like about yourself. Your list may include small things like, I donated to charity this week, or I smiled at the angry taxi driver on my way to work, and asked how he was doing. His mood seemed to improve. I hope I brightened his day, or I like my hair. Its curly and a lot of people tell me they wish they had hair like mine.

Set Goals

Sometimes the best motivation to lose weight is having detailed, short-term goals. Having long term goals is great too but it can be frustrating working toward a goal that seems so far away and perhaps unattainable. Setting short-term, attainable goals gives you positive reinforcement when youre able to achieve those goals.
