How Bariatric Patients Can Deal With Festive Overindulgence
The end of the year can strike fear in the hearts of patients following bariatric operations such as gastric bands and Roux-en Y gastric bypass
. A variety of food fests from Christmas and New Year mean that patients are confronted with a vast array of tempting foods and social settings. Few will escape unscathed and many will eat the high calorie snacks forgetting the reality of the post festival weight-gains.
It is fortunate that bariatric patients do not need to really diet to lose that regained weight. Simply returning to their recommended post op healthy eating plans will charge up their weight reducing operations and get them back on track.
The general rules remain the same.
1)Dont eat and drink at the same time
2)Take small mouthfuls and chew well
3)Eat real food and not soft babyfood textures
4)Avoid liquid calories
5)Reduce fats
6)Increase protein
7)Fill up on low glycaemic index carbohydrates to enable a feeling of fullness. These carbohydrates keep a constant blood sugar level and stop hunger pangs. Such foods include basmati/wholemeal rice, porridge, beans, pulses, lentils, baby new potatoes, bananas and sweet potatoes.
Its also important to keep in contact with your dedicated bariatric team as they can advise and help motivate you to get back to basics. Eating over Christmas is not a crime and patients shouldnt feel guilt or shame. They simply need to recognise that it was a small holiday and all they need to focus on now is restoring normality to their diet and eating habits.
Guy Slater specialist bariatric surgeon for Streamline Surgical and star of the Discovery Home & Health channels FAT DOCTOR series comments:
Losing weight is very hard when you are obese. It is important not to criticise people but to help them in reclaiming control of their eating.
Bariatric surgery is a great tool and patients need to make sure they are working with it at all times.
We all understand that the festive season brings with it lots of opportunities to eat the wrong foods. If bariatric patients do overindulge its not ideal, but at the same time they shouldnt feel guilty about it. At Streamline Surgical we have a dedicated bariatric team who will ensure that all patients are supported throughout their journey.
Our website forum offers a great place for patients to share their stories and discuss any non medical problems they may be having with our team and other forum members. Bariatric patients will go through ups and downs, what its important to remember is that as long as you work with your surgery it will be a success.
