Will Your Brain Work Without Omega-3 Fats
Over the weekend, I've been reading some very interesting books and studies about the effect of omega 3 fats on the brain
. Now reading academic journals can be tough, but the way this latest information was laid out was very clear and concise.
In Dr. Mark Hyman's book, "The UltraMind Solution," he states:
"Our brains don't work without omega-3 fats. Period." Dr. Hyman links low levels of omega-3 fats to depression and anxiety, bipolar disease, attention deficit disorder, autism, learning disabilities, dementia, Alzheimer's, a laundry list of mental illnesses, and of course, cancer and heart disease.
His opinion is seconded by Dr. Joseph Hibbeln at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hyman says there are 4 key roles played by Omega-3 fats:
1. They build all cell membranes
2. They reduce inflammation, which has been linked to almost all brain problems.
3. They balance blood sugar, which is esssential for keeping your brain healthy.
4. They increase the activity of a key molecule in your brain called BDNF (brain derived
neurotropic factor) which acts like fertilizer for your brain, stimulating new cell growth, and increased cell connections.
In case you didn't know it, you CAN grow new brain cells. But if your body is low on, or has no omega-3 fats, that won't happen.
Just taking a daily dose of pharmaceutical grade fish oil will help your brain grow, improve connections, make mood chemicals work better, reduce inflammation, and improve the function of every cell in your body, by giving them the fats they need to build smooth, fluid membranes that communicate information easily.
