Home And Away: Avoiding Vacation Rental Cheaters

Home And Away: Avoiding Vacation Rental Cheaters

What could be better than being able to rent an entire house or condo for your vacation and stretch your dollar

? For those who are looking into vacation rentals for the first time, caution is a must. While there is extremely desirable accommodation available, there are also an equally large number of vacation rental deals that are not what they seem.

One of the most common complaints about vacation rentals you might encounter are that the actual property looks shockingly rundown and nothing like the pictures shown in a brochure, pamphlet or online. Most likely, the pictures you saw were taken several years ago when the property was still new and relatively unused. In such instances, it may be best for you to cut your losses and seek out better accommodation.

You should be wary of property owners who pressure you into an agreement with them, and who demand a deposit or upfront payment as soon as possible to boot! The only reason anyone would be so anxious to get their hands on your money through non-refundable means such as a wire transfer is that they're afraid you'll change your mind about renting the property. The worst case scenario for vacation rental deals like these are that the traveler arrives at his or her destination and discovers the property doesn't even exist in the first place. Or, if the address is correct, it belongs to someone who has no idea that it's been "rented out"!

To avoid being the victim of such unscrupulous practices, it would be best for you to visit the address in question before money exchanges hands. If it isn't possible for you to be physically present at the location, you can try looking it up reviews for it online. However, if you can't even find the postal address online, then it probably doesn't exist.

Always be hesitant about giving money to someone you don't know. A credit card should be used as far as is possible, and insist that all agreements be in writing before making any form of payment. Here's to happy holidays!
