FIVE years after the current generation of kids stepped through the wardrobe and into Narnia, we are returning again.This time around Susan and Peter have grown too old and too mature to return but Edmund and Lucy, along with their obnoxious cousin Eustace, still have a lot to learn.When a painting of a ship sailing in the sea spills water into their bedroom, the trio find themselves in Narnia once again.Far from explaining why or how they end up in the fantasy world, the film (and, so, the audience) simply accepts and plows on through the plot.Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) is now King Caspian and as usual there are talking animals, led by warrior mouse Reepicheep (Simon Pegg).
Caspian is looking to find seven lords who went missing long ago, and unite their swords on Aslan's Table in order to stop an evil darkness that threatens to overtake their world.
Along the way, the main characters are forced to test themselves against temptations with some consequences more harsh than others.
Viewers familiar with the books will feel it flood back to them as we see dufflepuds, magicians, minotaurs and fawns takepart in the action.Disappointingly, the voyage feels cut short and some of the more entertaining scenes I read in the books skimmed over.But without the fast pace the film sets, it threatens to go beyond two hours, which would be too much for some people.Certainly the performances from Narnia regulars Georgie Henley as Lucy, Skandar Keynes as Edmund and Barnes as Caspian are more rounded and professional than previous Narnia instalments.
The efforts of newcomer William Poulter as obnoxious, annoying and rude cousin Eustace is outstanding. I certainly hope it was a stretch for him to take on his character or else (in real life) he is a horrid, little boy.
Also entertaining is Simon Pegg as Reepicheep. There isn't a lot of comedy for Pegg, who is more famous for Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, but the character of Reepicheep embodies Narnia.
