Healing Sciatica Via Surgical Treatment

OTC drugs, reflexology, physical therapies, natural therapies and so on are few of the treatments available for sciatica sufferers

. In case you have been suffering from sciatica for a long time and no treatment has provided any signs of improvements or result, then you've to go through surgery.

Surgery for sciatica is needed only in atypical scenarios. There're specific conditions that call for the need of surgery. Some such circumstances include bowel or bladder dysfunction, severe spinal stenosis, or neurologic dysfunctions.

There're basically 2 kinds of surgeries that are used for treating sciatica. They're Discectomy or Microdiscectomy and Laminectomy or Laminotomy. Discectomy is conducted when sciatica is caused as a result of a herniated disc. This procedure involves the removal of the herniated disc. Only part of or the entire herniated disc might be removed.

Microdiscectomy works on the same lines as Discectomy. However, Microdiscectomy is a minimally evasive surgery. A very small incision is made via a microscopic magnification. This ensures speedy recovery after surgery. It's for this reason that a lot of people opt for Microdiscectomy.

Another form of surgery that's used to heal sciatica is Laminectomy or Laminotomy. In such surgery, the lamina is removed. A bony plate that essentially functions as a protection of spinal cord is known as lamina. This plate is removed to create space for the nerves in the spine that also covers sciatic nerve. A sufficient space between the spinal nerves reduces the probability of sciatic nerve compression. This process aids in treatment of sciatica.

Both Laminectomy and Laminotomy are pretty much the same and include the removal of the lamina. However, laminectomy involves removal of the entire lamina where as laminotomy involves removal of just a part of the lamina. Thus, laminotomy is less evasive and hence assures swift recovery.

Sciatic surgery also has its set of pros and cons. Though, surgery certainly treats sciatica, it also hinders the normal routine for a while. In some scenarios, patients are allowed to move after twenty-four hours, but they still need to be extra-cautious about their movement.

You need to be careful about the way you walk, stand or even sit to be certain that you are not exerting any unnecessary pressure on the spine. Your doctor might prohibit you from indulging in physically taxing activities such as playing sports, working out, running and the like.

Surgery is just one option of countless other options available for treating sciatica. If, you fear going under the knife, try other non surgical procedures to cure sciatica.
