Gum Disease Treatments

Introduction

Gum disease is also called periodontal disease or periodontitis. It is the inflammation of the tooth surrounding tissues and is the main cause of tooth loss. Gingivitis refers to bacterial infection of the mouth tissues which usually occurs prior to the onset of gum disease. Many options are available for treating gum disease. The method used is determined by the kind and severity of the infection and part of the gum infected. Your general dentist will refer you to the right and best specialist after diagnosing the disease.

Initial Treatments

The dentist evaluates the extent of damage, decides on type of treatment to use and develops a conservative initial plan. She/he performs a dental hygiene evaluation to determine if plaque has to be removed daily. Plague consists of soft deposits on the teeth. Calculus, also referred to as tartar, is removed by professional cleaning which may include extra procedures of root planing and deep scaling. A local anesthetic may be applied during these procedures. The dentist will prescribe antibiotics to clear bacteria from the pocketed parts of the gum and a medicated mouthwash for use as a regular part of home regimen.

Advanced Treatments

Tissue regeneration, surgery and laser therapy are advanced treatment procrdures.

Tissue Regeneration

This procedure is carried out if the bone has been destroyed. It is a new which is carried out by grafting the bone. It enhances bone re-growth. Soft tissue grafts may also be performed to make thin gums strong. Guided tissue regeneration is done by inserting a membrane to enhance bone regeneration process. It may be found necessary when performing periodontal surgery.

Pocket Elimination Surgery

The surgical procedures listed below can be used to treat gum disease and prevent tooth loss;

Periodontal flap surgery - is done to decrease the pocket space between the gums and teeth.

Jaw bone reshaping - This is bone surgery performed to reshape the jaw bone to remove craters. Bacteria infest the craters and cause gum disease. Removal of the craters eliminates the bacteria and prevents re-infestation.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is performed to reduce pocket size. There is no concrete evidence confirming the effectiveness of laser therapy in restoring connective tissue damaged by gum disease.

Cost Factors

Several factors determine the cost of treatment of gum disease. Root planing procedures and additional routine tooth scaling and cleaning at the gingivitis stage may be necessary to prevent recurrence of gum disease. They increase the cost of treatment. Other factors which affect treatment costs include the kind of technology used, location of the dentist, type of dental insurance cover used and method of treatment used.

Cost

The dentist may perform diagnosis and initial treatment, but refer the patient to a better trained periodontist. The periodontist has more experience and skills at performing more advanced procedures. The treatment may be as cheap as $550 or as expensive as $15,000, depending on severity. The average cost of regular dental prophylaxis ranges between $35 and $80. That of periodontal root planing and scaling ranges between $145 and $215. Active periodontal therapy costs about $80 per tooth. It consists of locally administering antimicrobial agent into gum pockets. The average cost of the subsequent periodontal maintenance is about $120.
