Guidelines To Cosmetic Teeth Whitening

A lot of people avoid cosmetic teeth whitening because they fear going to the dentist

, just the thought of those cold metal instruments clanging against your teeth and the smell of latex gloves and surgical disinfectants is enough to put you off. Not to mention the cold uncomfortable atmosphere you are submerge to in most dental practices.

If this is how you feel about visiting the dentist you will be glad to know that depending on where you live, you can now have your teeth whitening treatment carried out by whitening professionals who are not dentist. Teeth whitening is now classed as a cosmetic procedure and not a dental procedure in the UK and Europe.

You can now find cosmetic teeth whitening studios set up in most areas offering laser teeth whitening. A lot of these studios have chosen to set up with a beauty salon surrounding in mind, creating a warmer more comfortable environment for the customer.

Cosmetic teeth whitening doesn't just mean laser though; there are a variety of systems you can use. Depending on the system you use the results will differ, below I have describe the laser method in a little bit more detail to help you make a more informative choice, if this is the route you're looking to take.

Laser Cosmetic Teeth Whitening

As the name mentions this type of whitening is carried out using a laser, before the treatment a consultation is usually done or should I say should be done. This is to decide if you are suitable for laser whitening; no major health problems, pregnant or breast-feeding, at this stage an examination of the mouth is also done to make sure there is no major problems with your teeth and gums; like badly cracked teeth or severely receding gums.

If all are good and your happy to go ahead, the whitening technician will then proceed by first making a record of your tooth shade colour. To protect your eyes you should be given a pair of goggles to wear.

A cheek retractor is then placed in your mouth. This is a little uncomfortable but essential contraption used to spread your mouth wide open, exposing your teeth, making them easier to work with.

They will then add a thin gum barrier around your gum line to protect your gums from the whitening gel. The surface of your teeth is then painted with the whitening gel, which nine times out of ten will be a peroxide base gel.

Once you are in a comfortable position the laser light is position a few inches from your teeth. The laser works by opening the pores in your teeth, allowing the gel to penetrate into the teeth, whitening them from the inside out.

The process is carried out for about 12 - 15 minutes, the gel is then wiped clean and repeated for about three times, the end result whiter brighter teeth in under an hour.
