Gosford situated on the banks of Brisbane Water is a boat lover's paradise

Gosford is often called the "Gateway to the Central Coast." It is an good description, because no matter if you're traveling by car, train or even by boat from Sydney, it will be likely that Gosford is going to be your initial stop along the scenic Central Coast of New South Wales. The city of Gosford is also the administrative capital of Gosford Shire. As such, it is an important regional center in one of the fastest growing areas of Australia.

Until the mid 1980s, Gosford Shire was a comparatively quiet part of NSW and was technically categorized as "Country New South Wales." It was predominantly known as a stopover between Sydney and Newcastle. A lot of the permanent population in the area was made up of retirees. During the summer months, the population grew with holiday makers from Sydney, but other than that, the locals had all the beautiful beaches, waterways and bushlands all to themselves.

Then something momentous happened: In 1987, the F3 Freeway replaced the old winding road that led from the outskirts of Sydney to Gosford. The wide new freeway, part of National Route 1, slashed driving times between Sydney and the Central Coast in half. This made it possible for those who wanted to live on the Central Coast but had to work in Sydney to easily commute to work every day. Nearly within the blink of an eye, new suburbs and shopping centers popped up and the population of the area soared. Gosford is no longer a quiet little country town.Gosford situated on the banks of Brisbane Water is a boat lover's paradise

There was plenty of room for everyone and Gosford and its surrounding communities still have an open, spacious feel to them. Yes, the popular sandy beaches at Terrigal and Avoca Beach might get crowded during the summer, but if you know your way around, it is possible to just drive over the hill from Avoca to its neighbor Copacabana or even just walk up the beach to North Avoca and find a place in the sun to call your own.

For surfers, the beaches, points and reefs in the Gosford areas are the true Surfers Paradise. This area has arguably produced more international surfing stars per capita than any other region in Australia. As far back as the early 80s, when the populations of several of the coastal towns were very small, Central Coast surfers including Ross Clarke-Jones, Glenn Winton and Bryce Ellis were among the world's top 10 surfing contenders. This proud tradition continues to this present day, with surfers like Adrian Buchan from Avoca Boardriders Club making their mark on surfing history.

The Central Coast has a great deal to boast about, the "Gateway to the Central Coast", Gosford, can often be overlooked. Besides its many other attractions, Gosford happens to be situated on Brisbane Water, which makes it a haven for boating enthusiasts. If you want to see the best of the area, sail from Gosford to Sydney or take a tour towards the mouth of Brisbane Water at Umina. This circuitous waterway takes you past charming and attractive towns like Woy Woy, Ettalong and Pretty Beach. From there it is just a short hop over to Palm Beach in Northern Sydney or to Sydney Harbour itself.

Along with the population explosion along the Central Coast came an explosion in tourism. Fortunately, a lot of the new residents opened up hotels, motels and other facilities to cater to the flood of tourists. Today, you can stay in a luxurious hotel in Terrigal or find a quaint and affordable Gosford accommodation within a stone's throw from the beach or Brisbane Water. If you're looking for fun and relaxation in the sun, you will find a lot more than you're looking for in Gosford and Gosford Shire.
