Global spotlight on Indian Entrepreneurs: TiECON Chennai 2011 focuses on enabling sustained entrepreneurial growth; highlights opportunities in non-traditional sectors Kiran Mazumdar Shaw encourages entrepreneurs to innovate in her keynote address
Chennai, November 24th 2011: Eminent entrepreneur and business leader Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman & MD, Biocon Ltd spoke to over 1500 entrepreneurs today, urging them to invest in their ideas and innovation, at one of Indias largest entrepreneurial conclaves - TiECON CHENNAI 2011, held at the Chennai Convention Center. She said consistent focus on innovation is critical for entrepreneurs to remain competitive in a globally shrinking and dynamic economy and enable continuous and sustained growth. The hall at the Chennai Convention Center teemed with entrepreneurs, business executives and management students as Kiran Shaw and other successful entrepreneurs and professionals including Dr Sumantran of Ashok Leyland & Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd, Marc Llistosella, MD & CEO of Daimler Commercial Vehicles India Pvt Ltd, Lakshmi Patury, Host & Curator of TED fame, and Lakshmi Nambiar, Investment Manager, Avendus Capital Advisors discussed opportunities in fast emerging sectors and ways to sustain entrepreneurial growth in India.
With the theme Opportunity-See it, Size it & Seize it, TiECON CHENNAI 2011 presented a series of parallel discussions delving into opportunities in relatively lesser tapped sectors such as agriculture, food, social entrepreneurship, education, healthcare, etc. besides providing a solid platform for budding entrepreneurs to present their ideas or discuss scaling opportunities and network with investors, key stakeholders and other fellow entrepreneurs across diverse sectors. Suresh Krishna, Chairman & MD, Sundram Fasteners Ltd lit the lamp and inaugurated the annual conference with a short note on why entrepreneurship is critical to Indias growing economy. He also presented the coveted TiE Chennai Entrepreneur awards to the winners in over ten different categories such as Dronacharya award for excellence to, Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, IIT/RTBI Lifetime achievement award to Suresh Krishna, Chairman & MD, Sundram Fasteners Ltd and Entrepreneur of the year award to Dr. Arun, Vasan Healthcare Pvt Ltd.
Speaking after the inauguration, Suresh Krishna, said, While the entrepreneurial ecosystem has definitely grown in India and it may no longer be a huge challenge to attract investments, sustaining this ecosystem and long term entrepreneurial success demands ability to scale up quickly, be globally competitive and agility to adapt to changing business requirements. It is heartening to see that TiE Chennai is continuously increasing the credibility of this annual platform that brings together diverse stakeholders to facilitate this process.
In his comments, Lakshmi Narayanan, President, TiE Chennai said, It is very important for entrepreneurs to be able to scale, innovate and grow their markets further, post the initial growth and success. While the economy and our policy framework supports entrepreneurs much more today, there is a lot to be done in the area of mentoring and guiding entrepreneurs to enable them grow faster and face stiff competition from across the globe. As one of the largest entrepreneur associations across the globe and in Tamil Nadu, we are committed to provide mentoring support and this years TiECON has been designed to accelerate this process. I am happy that the quality of the discussions since morning and the growing number of attendees shows that this annual conference is looked forward to platform for the entrepreneur community.

In their keynote address at the conference, Chitra Ramakrishna, Joint Managing Director, NSE and Satya Bansal, CEO, Barclays Securities elaborated on the opportunities within Small and Medium Enterprises and ones that they could tap into in fast emerging sectors and the opportunities to transform job seekers to job providers respectively and set the tone for the remainder of the conference, which featured six diverse parallel discussions on interesting subjects such as Opportunities on the road less traveled, featuring offbeat/unique businesses and Opportunities to turn up trumps featuring visionary entrepreneurs such as Srinivasan HR, Vice Chairman Take Solutions, Anand Mecheri, Co-founder, i-Metrex, Apoorva Ruparel, CEO, Clean Ray among others. Lakshmi Nambiar of Avendus Capital moderated an interesting discussion on Opportunities to catalyze the market through capital, where fast growing entrepreneurs like Vamshi Reddy of Apalya Technologies, Phanindra Sama, RedBus, Ravi Pratap, Mobile Motion Technologies and Vivek Ravishankar of Interview Street participated and spoke of their experience on getting ready to attract investments, availability of capital from various sources at different stages of business and the timing to access capital to build on opportunities.
The TiE Chennai LIBA business plan award was also presented at the conference to the winner, AMRAAS a team of two, Anjali Raj of ISB Hyderabad and Rahul Gupta of IIT Hyderabad for their innovative idea on wellness centre for pregnant women. The centre focuses on includes fitness, nutrition, family counseling and apparel planning. TiE Chennai along with LIBA will help to incubate and convert their idea into a commercial venture. The highlight of the conference though was the successful debut at the conference last year which once again received a tremendous response, the Tamil panel discussion focused on opportunities and entrepreneurs in the state.
This years Ninaithadhai Mudipavargal (Those who achieve what they think) programme featured successful entrepreneurs including Murugavel of Consim Info and Sharada Ramanathan, Director, Golden Square Films and Magnus Media.
TiECON CHENNAI 2011 ended with a new and enthralling one hour session called Opportunity to get awestruck, in which more than 15 emerging entrepreneurs presented unique business models and exciting opportunities in non-traditional domains, a befitting finish to a conference that aimed to highlight unique and lesser known business opportunities and accelerate innovation among entrepreneurs.
