As children we were taught responsibility, how irresponsibility can affects different
aspects of our lives, and consequences we may face if we fail to make the responsible choice. As adults we face many situations where we must make the responsible choice that has our best interest and the best interest of our families. When making the decision to get or not get health insurance, the responsible choice is to get health insurance.Our health and the health of our family is something we have to take care of every day of our lives. Our food choices and activity choices can affect our health and making irresponsible choices can have life threatening consequences. Even with healthy and responsible choices concerning our health, we can still become sick or be involved in an accident which will involve seeking medical treatment. Depending on the seriousness of the illness or injuries, substantial medical costs can be incurred.
Medical costs for a common illness such as a cold or the flu are manageable on a simple budget but for more serious illnesses or injuries the costs can be quite large. Many family budgets are unable to handle large medical bills without taking away from the basic needs of the family. A smaller and responsible investment in health insurance can help ease the burden that can be caused by expensive medical bills.
A health insurance policy does not completely relieve the burden of medical costs but does make a substantial difference. A health insurance policy will cover a certain percentage of medical costs that may be incurred which is dependent on the coverage of the health insurance policy. In addition the percentage of coverage can be different for in-network doctors and facilities which are those who are partnered with the insurance company and out-of-network doctors who are not partners with the insurance company.
Most health insurance policies limits the out-of-pocket expenses that an individual or family would have to pay out for medical expenses. The out-of-pocket expense limit gives a predetermined amount per individual and family that would be incurred in the calendar year of coverage. This can extremely helpful when creating a budget that takes into account the set costs for health insurance premiums and the out-of-pocket expense limit.
Once an out-of-pocket limit is reached, complete medical costs in most cases become the responsibility of the health insurance company. While this may seem ideal for the policy holder, to protect the insurance company lifetime limits are typically established as part of the policy. Once the lifetime limit is established no matter what amount of time has passed, the policy is considered fulfilled and medical coverage will cease.
While there are limitations to what health insurance policies will or will not cover and how much coverage it will provide, the overall investment in health insurance is a responsible choice. Having a health insurance policy will make budgeting for health care expenses easier and less burdensome for any individual or family.
