Finding Your Area's Perfect Dentist

Let's face it: there are few experiences that are more scary

, more anxiety-creating, than taking a trip to the dentist. It's hard to put your finger on it, but there is something about the mixture of the smell, the noises of the drill, and the blue masks-not to mention the fear that you have cavities burrowing inside your teeth-that can cause people to squirm in their seat. The best way to combat this anxiety (along with brushing and flossing, of course) is to choose a dentist that will help you feel comfortable and at home. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you look for the right dentist in your area.

The first thing you want to work out is any insurance logistics. This means making sure that the dentist you are going to work with fits into your current insurance plan and will handle all the paper work quickly and easily. Find out from your insurance agent what type of dental procedures or what type of dentists are covered, and then start shopping around.

Most people these days will focus their search primarily on the Internet. This gives you instant access to a dentist's profile, history, a list of services they provide, a clear map of their office's location, etc. As you look at these sites, keep a few things in mind. First, anyone can put together a flashy website or pay someone else to make it look nice. Do not judge everything by the bells and whistles it has. At the same time, if a dentist's site provides inaccurate or poorly-maintained material, they might not care or be as attentive about their service as others.

Speaking of services, make sure the dentist you choose offers the different procedures you need. This might include more than just regular cleanings: do you foresee any teeth whitenings, veneers, orthodontic work? Rather than meeting with a number of different practitioners, finding one office that can handle all of this will help cut down on your hassle with paperwork and the like. Also, it will help give you an idea if this particular office is up-to-date on the latest technology, procedures, and different techniques to provide you with the highest quality service.

And then there are the other questions you want to ask: what is your emergency service policy? How often do you schedule appointments? Knowing this information, as well as the basic workings behind each office, can help you determine which regional dentist is best for you.
