Dogs are one of the most popular pets around. This allows them to produce particular characteristics that the prospective owner prefers. Although a dog breeder would be a great choice for you, there are some things you might want to keep in mind before you decide upon such a professional.
One of the first things you should do is perform an informal background check on the person you are thinking about using. This does not need to be in line with the background checks that are performed before someone gets a job. All it involves is you taking the time to ask some key questions. Find out how long the person has actually been involved with this particular type of work. Keep in mind that just because someone is relatively new to the field, that doesn't mean that they should necessarily be written off. Instead, quiz them on their intentions and why they decided to get into breeding. You don't want to do business with someone who is in it for the wrong reasons.
The next thing you should inquire about are health issues. See if the dog breeder will be open and candid about the health defects and issues that are prevalent with the specific breed in which you are interested. Also, ask about whether or not they have ever produced any dogs with such defects. This isn't a reason to be too alarmed, unless of course it happens far more often than not.
Lastly, see if the person will provide you with references. If they are hesitant about completing this task, or if they flat out refuse, then this is reason to be concerned.
Finding a dog breeder doesn't have to be difficult. However, in order to get the best results, make sure you ask the right questions and take all necessary precautions.
