Feeding Your Children A Well-balanced Meal

Feeding Your Children A Well-balanced Meal

Feeding your child a well balanced meal is important for their overall health

. It improves their immune system, as well as decreases the likelihood of obesity. You should try to get as many foods from the basic food groups in each meal as possible.

The most important meal of the day is breakfast. Before you send your child out the door to school, they should sit down and eat a good breakfast. An ideal breakfast would be a glass of milk or juice, an egg, toast, some fruit, and maybe a piece of bacon or sausage. You can alternate different items through the week to get a variety of meals. Some days you can give your child oatmeal and a banana, or pancakes and strawberries.

If you choose to let your child buy lunch at school, you will know they are getting a nutritious meal. Schools are being mandated to serve a specific caloric amount for lunch and must serve a variety of fruits, grains, and vegetables. They must also offer milk and juice to drink. When your child comes home from school, offer them a nutritious snack such as popcorn, crackers, or fruit slices. These are also a great snack to send to school for the child to eat during recess.

Supper is a meal that is the hardest to plan. Most families do not have time to sit together and eat at one time. The mother is usually the one who is cooking for the kids,or the older children come home and eat something from the freezer that they can heat in the microwave. If at all possible, prepare a meal that you can sit down and eat together. Casseroles are a great dish that can be prepared ahead of time and then placed in the stove to heat up. You can add meats and vegetables to the casserole so that small children can try new foods without knowing they are in there. As with breakfast, offer something from each food group such as bread, milk, fruits or vegetables, and a protein.
