Excellent Adobe Acrobat X Suite. Global Review

If you're running Acrobat on the Mac, or if you have Outlook installed on your Windows machine

, you'll have no trouble using this data collection feature with the contacts listed in your OS X or Outlook address book. With the beta version, on a Windows system that didn't have Outlook installed, I couldn't get Acrobat to extract addresses from my Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail address books, so I wasn't able to use this feature at all until I tested it on a system with Outlook on it. Adobe says that Acrobat uses Windows' MAPI interface to find addresses, but didn't offer any way of using a non-Outlook address book. Not everyone uses Outlook, especially in government and educational offices, and I hope the shipping version of Acrobat will be able to use the address books that large numbers of systems rely on.

Automation

Other nifty new features in Acrobat X include an Action feature that lets you use a few clicks to perform a preset series of tasks, for example a set of tasks that remove hidden data and optimize a PDF before publishing it to the Web. Acrobat's Actions resemble Quick Tasks in Outlook 2010 or the Automator features in OS X, and are just easy to build through an Action Wizard. The program ships with seven prebuilt Actions that do such things as scan a document into a PDF or remove sensitive data from an existing PDF. These can be modified through a simple wizard interface, or you can use the wizard to build your own actions. It took me a few seconds to create an Action that scans a document, prompts me to enter document information, optimizes its file size, and prompts me to enter a filename to use when saving it.

PDF Portfolios

The past few versions of Acrobat have supported PDF Portfolios, a feature that lets you import multiple file types such as Word documents and video files into a single PDF file. This has feature always seemed slightly clunky, with crude-looking tables of contents and other substandard design features. The new version jazzes up the interface that creates portfolios, and has offers improved graphic designs for the portfolio files themselves, but I wish it this feature were more customizable than it is so that I have complete control over the way a portfolio looks. Maybe next time.

Acrobat X will ship in three commercial versions and the freeware Adobe Reader X. Acrobat X Standard ($199 street) and Acrobat X Pro ($119.95 street) are closely similar, but only Pro lets you insert audio and video files in PDF documents for direct playback in Acrobat and Reader, and only the Pro version converts AutoCAD, Visio, and Microsoft Project files into PDF format. A more expensive package, Acrobat X Suite ($159.95 street), combines Acrobat Pro with Photoshop CS5, Captivate CS5, and a few other Adobe packages.
