Do You Have The Right Motorhome Insurance?

Do You Have The Right Motorhome Insurance?

If you've just recently purchased a new motorhome then of course you'll need to start shopping around for insurance

. In fact, even if you've been insuring your motorhome with a particular provider for a number of years, you may want to consider shopping around when the time comes to renew your current policy.

Visiting a few insurance comparison websites is probably the best way to go about finding affordable insurance, in that it allows you to compare a number of quotes from several UK insurance providers.

Unless you're rolling in money, making some form of savings on motorhome insurance probably rates pretty high on your agenda and in that case, it really wouldn't be wise to simply go with the first policy you get offered. Either way, let's go ahead and take a quick look at the basic types of insurance which are available to you.

Fully Comprehensive: Do You Have The Right Motorhome Insurance?

This is the most expensive choice when it comes to motorhome insurance, but with that said, it does offer you the best possible level of cover, not only for your own motorhome, but also for the vehicle of a third party. This is definitely the type of cover you should be considering if you have purchased a brand new vehicle or one which is in 'as new' condition.

Opting for fully comprehensive cover also means that not only will your vehicle itself be insured, but so will all the contents within the vehicle. That includes things such as TV's, satellite navigation systems, refrigerators, cookers, camping equipment and even your personal belongings such as clothing for example.

You'll also have the option to have European cover included for a small extra fee. If you intend travelling across into Europe then this is something you'll need to have, but if you don't think you'll be leaving the UK in your motorhome, then it's best not to have this included, in that it will just cost you extra when you don't really need it.

Even though fully comprehensive cover is the more expensive option, there are however ways in which to keep the cost of such a policy down. One of the most common ways is to have your excess increased. This means that you will be expected to pay more up front in the event that you need to make a claim. Even though this will mean lower premiums, you shouldn't have the excess set too high. Remember, if you make a claim and you can't afford to pay the excess, you're not going to get any money out of the insurance company, so always make sure your excess is affordable.

Joining a motoring and or caravan club can also count in your favour, in that many insurance providers will offer members additional discounts. However, this is something you'll need to verify first, in that not all the insurance companies do this.

Third party, fire and theft:

If you really can't afford fully comprehensive motorhome insurance cover, or if the value of your motorhome simply doesn't justify the expense, then you'll need to settle for third party, fire and theft insurance. Generally speaking, this is the cheapest type of cover you'll find, but you need to bear in mind that it provides hardly any cover for your own vehicle, apart from if it gets stolen or destroyed by a fire. Apart from that, it only provides cover for the third party in an accident.
