Differences Between Eating Disorders And Diets

Being on a diet does not mean you have one of the many eating disorders that exist

. If you have any one of the disorders then you are suffering from an illness that is brought about due to a number of emotional triggers. It will effect every area of your life and those close to you for its duration. Your self-esteem will is likely to be at an all time low.

The most well know of all these disorders is Anorexia Nervosa. The name itself means 'a lack of desire to eat'. People who have Anorexia Nervosa experience obsessive feelings of self loathing. The only time they feel good about themselves is when they are starving. No matter how thin an anorexic becomes, their body dimorphic disorder is so strong they still believe themselves to be fat.

The next most common disorder is Bulimia Nervosa, it has many similarities with Anorexia but in this condition sufferers do not avoid food, they eat and then they purge. Purging means deliberately eliminating the food from the body before it has had time to be digested properly by means of either laxatives or self induced vomiting. Bulimics weight gain tends to go from one extreme to another, which is commonly called yo-yo dieting.

Another closely linked eating disorder is Compulsive Eating Disorder. In many ways this is very similar to Bulimia and to Anorexia, the factor that sets it aside from both of these is that sufferers do not purge.

Suffers are usually very overweight and do not purge. The constant eating which momentarily feels good followed by feelings of guilt and then by feelings of self-loathing repeat themselves in a never-ending cycle with this illness.

The last of these common disorders ( there are many more but here we are looking at the primary ones ) is Binge Eating Disorder. Binge eating is closely linked to both Bulimia and Compulsive Eating Disorder. The frequency in which the binge eating is done is less than with Compulsive Eating Disorder and the quantity of food consumed is different also.

Binge eaters are exceptionally secretive and store food away purposely to eat when they can be by themselves. They will eat uncomfortable amounts to the point they feel sick but will not make themselves sick. The feelings of guilt and shame associated with eating such vast quantities of food are often used as self inflicted punishment as they consider themselves undeserving and unworthy.
