Dentist: Do Not Tolerate Unacceptable Staff Behavior

Dentist: Do Not Tolerate Unacceptable Staff Behavior

Anyone in the market for a new dentist should take time to consider a few details before they choose

. If you need a new practitioner, you should of course pay attention to the actions of the dentist, but you should also consider the entire dental office. An inexperienced or unprofessional staff can make any visit unpleasant, so find out what to look for in a great practice.

You can usually figure out how you will be treated in the office when you first call. Before you even schedule an appointment, you should call to ask questions about the policies. Pay attention to how you are treated. If you are immediately put on hold for several minutes, and then feel rushed when your questions are actually answered, you will probably not feel like you are being taken seriously. The practice could be very busy, but you should still be given at least a few minutes as a potential patient, especially since your experience on the phone may very well reflect how your practitioner will also treat you.

Once you go in for an appointment, you should feel welcome in the waiting room. Most reputable practices have a friendly receptionist who will tell you what your next steps should be. If the one you encounter does not smile at you, stares at your blankly, or completely ignores you, find another dental office. You need a dentist and a staff that will treat you like a valued patient right off the bat, especially since getting work done on your teeth is usually not that comfortable to begin with.

Aside from the receptionist, you should consider the behavior of the dental assistants, or anyone else claiming to help out the dentist. They should not make you feel rushed unless there is a valid reason, and should apologize for any long waiting periods that inconvenience you. In this situation, you are the customer, as you are paying for the services they offer. You deserve to be treated with respect so that you want to come back the next time you need dental services.

If the first office you go to has a staff that rushes, ignores, or disrespects you, don't be afraid to never return. You can even let them know why you will not be returning, as it is not appropriate to treat patients rudely. Most people are uneasy enough as it is at the dentist, and unprofessional offices tend to give all dentists a bad name.
