The United States has the highest percentage of incarcerated citizens than any other country in the world
. What does that say about this country's judicial system? We have so many people in county jails and both state and federal prisons that we do not have enough space to house them all.
California residents get taxed to house, feed, and pay for their expensive medical procedures while they do not pay a dime. California state prisoners, after being taken care of for the duration of their sentence, get released with 200 dollars to only come back shortly after. So what are we doing wrong? Who is to blame for this revolving door that is obviously not working and is costing us a lot of money?
We have so many laws (varies from state to state) that there are laws being violated every second. Laws get proposed then passed not only for the "safety" and well being of the people but also for revenue. These politicians like city mayors and state governors come have a budget to meet and for some reason they are always short. So they think of bills to propose that when passed can create more cash.
Now these "safety issues" or whatever they want to call it are usually things that the majority of people do. So when someone is caught violating this law they are fined. These are only minor offenses and do not lead to jail or prison. But there are those individuals who for some reason do not pay or simply cannot pay on time and the fine gets larger or becomes a warrant. Now he or she has a record.
Now what about the larger more serious crimes? Most of the country's incarcerated criminals are in prison due to drugs. Drugs are a serious issue and it is affecting our youth and spreading. A lot of these criminals will deny that their offense was drug related. Whether the crime was committed under the influence or to get money to pay for drugs or drug debt, it is still drug related. They do not want to admit that they have a drug problem especially in front of their peers because that would look weak and showing weakness in prison can be dangerous. So recognizing this problem the smart people we have in charge of this system decide they want to give them medication free of charge to help with their addiction and their other "problems". Fighting drug addition with drugs only leads to a new addition.
