Coping With Chicken Pocks: Preventive Measures And Treatment
Chicken Pocks is a virus infection that comes along with rashes and fever
. Most children suffer from the disease when they are young. The disease can be very traumatic for children, since it requires isolation and those infected are prevented from playing or touching others, who have not been afflicted with the disease in their lifetime.
The illness is contagious and spreads through the Varicella zoster virus. A chicken pock is a droplet infection, similar to small pocks. This implies that the virus transfers from one person to the other through coughs, sneezes and contact with the rash secretions.
How Can It Be Prevented?
To prevent contagion, the individuals suffering from it should be segregated and isolated as soon as they show Chicken pocks symptoms. Those, who have never had the infection, should not come very close to the infected individuals. Sanitizing and disinfecting the clothes, utensils and bedding of the patient can also prevent transfer of the virus. The virus can easily be culled with disinfectants like bleach, by heating and washing. When the rashes dry, they usually develop scabs, which are shed. At this stage, it becomes especially important to disinfect the surroundings in which the patient stays.
Signs Of The Infection
The first sign of the infection is a rash on the dermis, followed by fever. The rashes usually appear on the face and head. Chicken pocks look like red dots which ooze. With the onset of the infection, the rashes start to itch. Patients, who resort to scratching the infected area, may end up developing scars.
It is recommended that the person afflicted with the disease does not scratch or nick the boils and rashes. An untouched rash, after the end of the infection, leaves temporary pock marks, which do not leave any scars. It is also seen that once a person has been exposed to the virus and faced a full blown infection, he or she develops lifelong immunity to the disease.
It is better that a person has been exposed to the infection in childhood. In adults, it seems to cause greater complications as compared to those in children. The disease is also not life threatening. However, it can be detrimental to the health of expectant women and their unborn children. People with a low or suppressed immunity also fall in the high risk group. In case of HIV/AIDS patients, whose immune system is suppressed, the disease can prove to be fatal.
Treatment For The Disease
The treatment for Chicken pocks is easily available. Starting medication at the first sight of chicken pocks symptoms and diagnosis can control the infection in time and prevent it from causing further complications. To alleviate itching, soothing lotions, like calamine, can be applied on the rashes. Baths especially designed to relieve the itching sensation, can be taken. There are also lotions available that help in drying the rashes.
It is important to note that while fever that ensues after the inception of the infection may be treated with paracetamol, it should never be treated with asprin or drugs that contain asprin. Anti-histamines or anti- allergic medication can be taken to reduce the severity of the rashes. The disease is completely curable and even preventable, if proper precautions are taken.
