Contraindications Of Teeth Implants

It may be true that teeth implants are considered as the option in terms of replacing teeth that have fallen out due to accidents, old age, or certain oral problems. However, like any other procedure out there, this too has a set of contraindications, which means that this type of corrective surgery is not for everybody since there a few things that must be considered before this can be performed on a particular patient. In here, we will discuss the different contraindications of teeth implants.

Now, there are a lot of contraindications to implant dentistry. In order to determine if a patient is a good candidate for teeth implants, a few behavioral, systemic, and anatomic considerations must be assessed first.

Cases of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus type 2 are considered as one of the most significant contraindications to implant dentistry. This would be so because; patients with this condition have delayed wound healing. The healing process is one of the most significant processes that must be in good condition when performing any surgery since, the patient will not be able to recover well without this. Delayed wound healing in diabetes mellitus type 2 is basically caused by poor circulation of the blood into the periphery.

Several anatomic considerations must also be looked into in determining if a patient will be able to go through the said procedure safely. These include the height and volume of the bone available. This needs to be looked at since the bone will basically serve as the attachment into which the implant will be anchored securely. If bone mass is not sufficient, an ancillary procedure known as a block graft may be carried out in order to supplement the existing amount of bone in order to increase the success rate of the implant placement.

Recently, information have been discovered about oral and intravenous biphosphonates that are taken by patients for specific types of breast cancer and osteoporosis can put persons at great risk of developing delayed healing syndrome, which is referred to as osteonecrosis. Patients who take biphosphonates are not allowed to go through implant surgeries because of their wound healing processes. However, people who are taking these medications such as Actonel, Boniva, and Fosamax may be recommended to stop the administration of these drugs before subjecting themselves for implant surgeries. After which, they can resume these when they have recovered fully. Now, some studies have shown that this protocol may no longer be required. The results of these have stated that patients who have been taking biphosphonates have not shown any symptoms of delayed wound healing.

Aside from biphosphonates, bruxism or teeth grinding or clenching is also considered as another contraindication to implant surgery. This would be so since forces generated by this behavior can be detrimental to implants while bone healing is taking place. Movements generated by these can actually change the positioning of the implants thus; decreasing the success rates of the surgery.
