Constipation In Middle Aged Adults Tends Towards Colon Cancer

2012 Victoria Bowmann, PhD

When ones guts hurt and the doctors recommendations dont seem to work, one often reaches for over the counter laxatives. While this can give temporary relief, it becomes a cyclical situation. Research indicates that a cumulative lifetime use of commercial laxatives is associated with increased risk of colon cancer. They defined this as feeling constipated to the point of having to take something.

The researchers adjusted the association between constipation and commercial laxative use and colon cancer; and the association to laxative use disappeared and the association with constipation remained strong. This suggests that an important risk factor for colon cancer among middle-aged adults is frequent constipation (12-51 times per year).

Discomfort and frustration often accompany severe and chronic constipation. Whether is it occasional, only when traveling, or frequent, it is certainly undesirable. There are natural things that can help, so putting the pieces together can move a person towards health and perhaps away from colon cancer. After all, colon cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in the US. Most of the factors that contribute to this disease are within the control of the person.

Since 60% (or greater) of the immune system is in the intestines, maintaining a healthy environment (called micro biota) is extremely important. According to Internal and Emergency Medicine 2010, the potential role played by abnormal gut micro biota can determine important pathological conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colorectal cancer. In Cancer Letter 2011, the relationship between the hosts (thats us) various events (infection, diet, stress and inflammation) can impact the micro biota, which leads to a condition called dysbiosis. This further influences health or disease.

There is a relationship between the micro biota and the development of colorectal cancer. Evidence is emerging that manipulating this micro biota with probiotics and prebiotics impacts disease development. Not only can it benefit IBS, IBD and cancer, it is also associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Considering colon cancer and the events (infection, diet, stress, and inflammation) leads us to empowerment because we have so much control over these events. Infection can be treated medically or naturally, but it needs to be treated. The cause of the infection must be discovered so one isnt treating the symptoms and failing to treat the reason for the infection.

Diet is certainly under our control, so making healthy choices is very important. Whether one chooses to be a vegetarian is personal, however, fresh, healthy, organic when possible are the right choices. One can look at food combinations as well. There are certain foods that reduce colon cancer risks such as the broccoli family.

One can take a look at how they deal with stress. Perhaps meditation or contemplation is a practice to consider. Others might relieve stress with exercise: some like physical exertion such as running, while others find yoga to be beneficial.

Finally inflammation is a factor. As we continue into this century, inflammation is contributing to many diseases and conditions. Anti-oxidants are important as is finding ways to keep ones body more alkaline. Vegetable juicing can play a role too.

Lifestyle choices can make life more joyous and fun. While one makes different decisions, they are life giving. Instead of thinking, I have to give this up! realize that the payoff is certainly worth it.
