Coffee Can Help In Preventing Skin Cancer

Recently, researchers have done extensive research on this matter

, and what they have found is this: Coffee does help to prevent skin cancer from developing, but it does not help each coffee drinker the same. For women, skin cancer can be prevented up to 21 percent. As for men, the reduction is 10 percent. For women and men, the key is consumption. The more coffee, the better, according to multiple studies. Therefore, one cup of coffee is not enough, especially if that one cup is only being consumed once per month. To get the job done, three cups of coffee have to be consumed on a daily basis.

What Gives Coffee This Ability

Speaking of studies, one of the most recent ones performed found the cause of this positive effect that coffee possesses: It is the caffeine, along with the rich antioxidants, in coffee. This was made clear once the researchers for this study had separated over 113,000 men and women into two groups. One group was given caffeinated coffee to drink, and the other one was given decaffeinated coffee to drink. The group that drunk the caffeinated coffee had a much lower risk of getting skin cancer.

Which Skin Cancer Does Coffee Prevent

Unfortunately, in the studies carried out thus far, researchers have found nothing indicating that caffeinated coffee can reduce the risk of all forms of skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. All the data collected is solely based on basal cell carcinoma. However, it is a known fact that caffeine alone can reduce cancer, so coffee drinkers inevitably receive some level of protection against all forms of skin cancer. To what extent, though, only through further research can this be found out.

What Is Already Known

In past studies, researchers found that drinking a cup of coffee is like putting on sunscreen because the properties in coffee are linked to sun-protective benefits. In 2007, a study of 93,000 participants found that light coffee drinkers had a 12 percent lower risk of developing melanin skin cancer. Heavy coffee drinkers had a 32 percent risk reduction.

The Results Are In

Overall, coffee does a lot of good for the body, and, as countless studies show, it does go a long way in preventing skin cancer. Researchers, nonetheless, do not recommend people to increase their coffee consumption. The negative effects of drinking coffee still stand.
