Children's Wear Buying Tips

Children's Wear Buying Tips

Children's wear is a huge industry and there are a lot of options for parent to choose from when purchasing clothing for their child

. Children's wear can be found at all price points, from budget to designer. Here are some tips for getting the best deals for your money.

Always buy off season if possible. Stores take big markdowns at the end of every season. If you purchase clothing at these times, you can save as much as 80 to 90% off their regular price. Always buy a size or two up, so that you can be assured of a good fit next year. Children grow fast, and it's always better to buy too big than too small. Pay higher prices only for items that will be used year round or by several children in your family.

If you live in an area where the weather is fairly moderate, it might make sense to pay more for a jacket or pullover that can be worn most of the year. If you have three girls, for example, paying a higher price for a pretty holiday or party dress, might make sense if you know you'll be passing it down to all three girls. Most kids don't mind "hand me downs", as long as they are in good condition.

Better quality items are more likely to last longer. Shoe purchases can eat up a large amount of your children's wear clothing budget. A child's foot grows fast, so try to take advantage of sales on shoes whenever possible. Sometimes your child will only end up wearing a particular pair of shoes for just a few months before they have another growth spurt. That is why it's better to buy cheaper, if possible.

All children need some basics in their wardrobes. Many stores such as Target and Kohl's have great basics for kids at very reasonable prices. Items such as solid t-shirts, socks, khakis, and jeans can be found fairly inexpensively.

The growing trend of more designer-based wear in children's clothing is something every parent has to deal with at some time. The older the child, the more likely they are to want particular pieces by particular designers. To keep this need within your budget, only buy one or two designer pieces a season, and mix and match them with lower priced goods. Good choices are a jacket or cardigan that can be worn with several different pieces, or a designer t-shirt that can be worn alone or over other shirts. Off price stores such as TJ Maxx carry designer labels at a fraction of the original price. No matter what the season or trend, you can have a well dressed child for little money, if you plan ahead and follow the tips above.
