Canadian Event Company To Organise Cruise Weddings With Princess Cruises

Canadian Event Company To Organise Cruise Weddings With Princess Cruises

Engaged couples looking to book weddings at sea will now be helped by the Canadian

company Royal Ocean Events Inc after it was announced that they have signed a five-year contract with Princess Cruises to provide onboard weddings at sea.

Royal Ocean Events Inc. has taken over all shipboard destination weddings on 20 vessels ships all over the world and the ceremonies will be conducted by the ships' captains.

The new contract is said to be worth $10 million and the Delta-based team has now doubled in size from four staff members to eight, so the company can help couples plan their weddings abroad.

"This is our biggest contract," explained Tonia Scurr, the President of Royal Ocean Events Inc. "It will double our business. Now, we do about 1,500 to 2,000 weddings a year. [This] will mean an extra 800 to 1,000."

The company organises destination weddings for Holland America Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Carnival Cruise Lines but these ceremonies take place in port or on land at locations such as beaches, mountains and glaciers. The new contract will allow them to organise cruise weddings at sea for the first time.

"We set everything up for the couple and have [all the materials, like champagne or flowers] sent to the ship," said Scurr. "They decide what they want and we provide everything. It's like a land wedding, except that it's on a ship."

The weddings at sea range from $800 to $6,000 and the ship's captain can legally perform the onboard ceremony. The new contract will also help bring business to local Canadian companies including florists, photographers and entertainers.

As the number of couples getting married abroad increases, many cruise companies are cashing in on the "weddings at sea" market. The British cruise line Cunard started offering cruise ceremonies for couples at sea this month after they registered their three ships in Bermuda.

It is currently illegal for British vessels to conduct wedding ceremonies while out at sea but the law is bypassed when companies register their vessels abroad.

More couples are seeking unique destinations for their wedding abroad and cruise ships provide the perfect environment for romantic ceremonies plus an extended honeymoon to exotic locations.
