Big Dogs - Common Illnesses

Big Dogs - Common Illnesses

Anyone who has owned a dog knows that these animals have health issues that cannot be avoided

. Dogs, like any living creature, also become ill. This is mainly because of the lack of a healthy diet and exercise. Some breeds are more prone to certain illnesses then others, especially the larger dog types. There are also illnesses that are not noticeable in dogs when they are still puppies. This is where education about the breed and the dogs bloodline and medical history is important. Although some illnesses could already be in the dogs system, they can still be prevented from developing and getting worse.

Below are a few dog health issues commonly seen in bigger dogs:

Arthritis

Arthritis is as common in dogs as it is in humans. Larger breed are more susceptible to the problem, since their larger mass adds more pressure to their muscles. Dogs that show signs of discomfort and pain while moving could have this problem. Some dogs actually hide their pain because of natural instincts, so careful monitoring is important. Limping, yelping, and becoming less active and responsive are signs of pain caused by the illness. Changing their diet and giving them proper exercise are the best ways to minimize and even prevent arthritis. Big Dogs - Common Illnesses

Hip Dysplasia

This illness has more or less the same signs and symptoms as arthritis. Dog owners can treat this problem its diagnosed during its earlier stages. This illness happens when the socket and ball joint found on the dogs hips do not function correctly anymore. Some doctors would advise surgery, especially if the dog has had this problem for some time now. However, therapy has shown a big help with curing this illness. This illness is genetic and can be passed down from parents to puppies.

Degenerative myelopathy

Degenerative myelopathy or DM in dogs is another genetic illness. This disease targets the dogs nerves and starts its damage on the dogs hind paws and legs. Dog owners commonly start noticing the first few signs of this illness when their dog starts to drag their paws, instead of lifting them up. Their nails make a scratching sound and the constant dragging damages their paws. DM in dogs slowly progresses and will finally end with full body paralysis.

Bone problems

Bigger dogs are more prone to problems with their bones because of their size. Some dogs develop illness because of lack of exercise and nutrients from a good diet. Doctors who diagnose bone problems commonly ask the dog owners to give their dogs food supplements and a higher dose of calcium. Pet supply shops also offer vitamins and supplements specifically for dogs.
