Asbestos Removal Langley: What does Asbestos Look Like

?

If you think you may have asbestos in your home or maybe you are looking to purchase a home and you think it may contain asbestos, then you need to know what asbestos looks like. It is important to understand that there are different types of asbestos and the most common is called chrysotile. It is also important to understand the risks that you will be taking if you are around asbestos.

Asbestos was used in many materials that were used for construction prior to the mid-1990s in Canada. It is no longer used in any construction materials because it has been linked to many health issues. It has been linked to a few different types of cancer and there are actually many law firms that have a section dedicated specifically to asbestos related cases.

The most common type of asbestos, chrysotile, looks like shards of glass. It is long and thin, but you cannot recognize it with the naked eye. It can only be seen under a microscope. It was used in drywall, drywall mud, vinyl floor sheeting, textured ceilings, VCT tiles, boarding behind stoves, insulation, and many other materials that were used in construction prior to 1995.

Another type of asbestos is called amphibole and is considered to be more harmful than chrystotile. It is more durable and comes in thinner strands than chrystotile does. This is the type of asbestos that has been linked to mesothelioma simply because this type of asbestos seems to stay in the lungs longer than other types. Even though amphibole is more harmful chrystotile was used more often and is still considered to be carcinogenic.

If you think you have asbestos in your home or a home you are thinking of purchasing it is important that you have a licensed contractor come out and do the asbestos testing that is necessary to find out if you have it or not. This is because you are not going to be able to see it yourself and there are air tests and surface tests that can be performed to confirm whether or not you have asbestos.

When the contractor does the asbestos testing and finds that you do have asbestos, then it is time to have it removed. Asbestos removal is not something you should do yourself. Safety is very important and you want to make sure you have a licensed contractor with plenty of experience come in to handle the asbestos removal and asbestos testing.

If you decide to do it yourself you may not notice any of the consequences for many years, but you could end up with serious health problems because it was not done right. When in doubt always hire an asbestos abatement contractor to remove the asbestos materials from your home.
